How do you react to the 'hard sell'?
Interesting if there are any sales people on here and their perception of it.

Context - spotted an item I wanted online at a reasonable price - private sale. Not big, not expensive but the kind of thing that rarely comes up. I saw that it'd been there a few days and nobody had messaged about it. I don't haggle, I don't ask the price, if it's not posted I move on*. This was priced fairly so I enquired, prepared to pay the asking price.

Yes it was available.
Yes I can collect today (it was a fair bit away and I had a pal visiting from that direction who could collect but he's a late riser).

Then came the symptoms of a hard sell:
"I've had other interest"
"I need to know now"

It's 6.30am I'm not waking my mate up with a phone call!

I just lost interest and knocked it on the head. Don't know why, it's just an auto-response; I won't be pushed or pressured into a sale.

*one of my biggest bugbears is things for sale that aren't priced, especially in shops. I'd have thought it's a straight forward tasl ffs!

How do you peeps react to it?

What was it mate. My answer depends on how good the product is. If it's something amazing and you desperately want it then I'd be volleying my mate out of bed lol

I'd react the same to be honest, I swerve it if I think the person in a shop is trying to get me to buy more to go with what I want, fine with them recommending something and I say no, but don't keep trying to put it on me because I won't buy it

If you don't need it and feel pressurised, walk away. It's the only sensible option. I can understand that if you are given some thinking time, then the seller may find another less hesitant buyer - if that's clear from the outset, no harm, no foul.

My wife is not a native English speaker, it's really something to note that she doesn't fall for many sales pitches over here. It's almost like she can see through the psychological ploys involved. In her own language she's more of a sucker for a sales pitch. The upshot is, there is always some trick going on (if its conscious or not), and if I'm not 100%, I will walk away.

I can understand not putting prices on things, as you never know what traffic you might instigate or put off. If it's a big ticket item, then I presume most people will have done some research and know what region the price is in, so if they know that, then you probably wouldn't be put off. Probably some clever sales theory going on with this - probably worth a google.

While I was looking at Landrovers and narrowed it down to 6, then 1, but it was 250km away, but it was the stand out of the 6.
Before Christmas it was on at 10k, but I wasnt ready to buy. I got Christmas and other stuff out the way. Checked 3 weeks ago down to 8.5k.
After much to-ing and fro-ing He can make Weds, I cant, I can do Friday he cant etc. I did the 250km.
The original deal was with Reg and MOT or RWC.
I offered 7k, settled on 8k.
Then he said he was not including the Reg and Id have to get it MOTd my self...obvs didnt want to drop it from the original 10k.
I dropped my offer to 7.5
Then he said oh ive promised first refusal to some other guy at 8k, if he lets me down I'll get back to you
I left
I got a text...the ( no doubt fictitious) guy has let me down I'll let you have it for 7.75 and Ill do the the 6mths reg and MOT
By then Id found the possibly red one, which was better.
I had cash in my pocket last week to do the deal at 8k
'K him.

Bang on response. It shows you are not desperate. Bet it's still available now. I've had the same- then the seller contacted me a few days later and I knocked down the price.
Trouble is, the other day i was selling something and i had 2 queries within a minute. What did i do? I didn't want to say 'available' to someone if the one ahead of them in the queue decided they wanted it. I said 'yes it's available, but there's a lot of interest at the mo'

Then realised what i'd done.

Heard from neither of them again! lol

They're probably on the Swindon Town forums pondering this very thing.

I hate it. I walk away even if I really want it. Happened once in Turkey where I saw a pair of shoes I really really liked. I walked out in the end.

Sometimes the first deal on the table can be the best deal. Nothing worse than someone thinking they have your offer on the table and trying to play that against someone else so you were spot on to walk away ;)

Was reluctant to say, since wanting to get a cigar humidor would have some people seeing me as a tory. :(

He may have been genuine and had other interest but I do know what you mean, I know it can put potential customers off and probably costs the seller plenty of sales. I guess it depends on how popular he thinks it's going to be. Whenever I'm buying something I have a price in mind ( lower than the asking price of course ;) and then test the water and then from there proceed until I've purchased it at a price I'm happy with and the seller is happy with.
