Happy St George's Day

I was proud to be English as a kid.

Now I'm older with an understanding of history and humanity English is right down the bottom of my list of which nation I'd wish to belong to. In fact I'm embarrassed to be English. Though I'd still say the English landscape is among the best on the planet - especially the lake district.* Just for the record the USA is bottom of that list.

*and Wales and Scotland- but that's ok to include them because we own them. ;)

Happy Lake DIstrict day everyone!

That's sad to hear. Its not nice to see self loathing in any walk of life.

It's not loathing so much as embarrassment or disappointment - theres a lot that we English could be proud of. It's just the leaders we've 'elected' or tolerated, the politics, values, hypocrisy and the roads we have followed them down which ruins it. And the abandonment of our culture and sense of nationality to swallow others.

As a wise man once said...

"It is a strange fact, but it is unquestionably true, that almost any English intellectual would feel more ashamed of standing to attention during "God Save the King" than stealing from a poor box"

I'm not sure any other nation goes in for historical introspection as much as us.

Countries are an illusion. The royal family are humanoid reptiles. Don’t believe the truth
Kings were just the biggest gobs in an area who attracted a following, the bigger the following the more power and wealth derived from insecure people grovelling for favour. The more power. followers and wealth, the more they attract as self interested people who hope to get a slice or crumbs from the king's table grovelled also.

Kings battled kings for bigger areas while some of their followers battled with them and others waited to see who the stronger side was to back them. Eventually each region or country ends up with one king - they sit waiting until they're convinced their following is stronger than their neighbour's so they chance their arm to collect more land. This power is passed down the blood line whether or not the offspring are suitable or want the role. A mythical deity is called on to back up the claim to power and the king encourages his people to believe in this deity and its rules.

Occasionally a rival thug chances his arm on a king's territory. One french thug called Norman gets lucky with an arrow and brings in his own followers and suppresses all the native ones into serfdom. Those serfs today are proud that all their ancestors have worked and given their lives to ensure the thug's descendants remain wealthy and in power.

In between there's slavery and the raping of other nation's wealth involved. To please the mythical god and very real king (at this stage referred to as 'country') of course.
