Hand rules

Great decision by the ref, by the laws of the game that wasn't a penalty and he did well not to bow to pressure from the home players and fans just because the ball hit a defenders hand.

so player can jump infornt of the ball hands wide open and block the ball from going in, nice
this is the biggest screw up in modern football, hand rule as it is,

this rule really does my head in, it really does, it is just too complex for refs to handle, ideally it is ok, but it just doesnt hack it in real life.
arghh, ffs, im taking a beer

Nailed on penalty, stupid position, and definitely an un-natural place to have your arm.

I don't know what you'd do with your arms when someones kicking a ball at you from close distance but i'd say it's way more naturally to put them up in front of your face than to keep them glued to your side.

His arms weren't outstretched as far as he could get them to make himself bigger, they were up in front of his face but with his elbows bent to keep them relatively close to his face.

Was it deliberate? Only Fonte knows so refs use guidelines to help them make a decision. Distance between the player and the ball, any movement of the hand towards the ball, and whether the arms are in an unnatural position.

Fonte was pretty close really (and under no obligation to move his arms out of the way of the ball in order to avoid contact), he definitely didn't move his arms towards the ball and his arms were in a natural position to protect his face, not outstretched to make himself bigger.

Right call by the ref, and like the vast majority of handball decisions, not a clear deliberate infringment of the rules so no foul is the correct decision.

But the arm was nowhere near his face, it wasn't being used to protect himself from anything, it was a daft place to have his arm positioned and he could have had little or no complaint had a penalty been given.

The reaction also spoke volumes, Fonte knew himself he had gotten away with one.

Have you ever played football? When you're trying to block a shot or cross you've got to use ALL parts of your body to maintain any sort of proper balance. That includes your arms. Not to have your arms to some degree outstretched in trying to achieve this is what is totally unnatural. The incident in question was never a penalty. My worry over giving these as handball offences is that it would eventually lead to players actually preferring to aim at the hand, if not when having a chance to shoot on goal then certainly when putting in a cross.

Was watching Ruud Gullit earlier pissing himself that it wasn't given, has he ever played football?

Such a stupid question, the player himself knew he got away with one, and if you asked Koeman he'd admit to it being a penalty too.

So a professional footballer who has won the Premier league and played for his country just decided to knock the ball away with his hand in the area in full view of the ref did he?
