Like many on this site, I've been watching the unfolding drama in Haiti. I've watched the news expecting all the goodwill in aid to flow in. And while the people in Haiti have shown some remarkable patience, I really can't see how all this aid isn't getting through to the people.

I don't know about logistical issues, not my field, but I can't believe that it takes over a week to deliver all that aid, and with the help from the biggest country in the world.

You gotta ask, what the hell is going on?

It's because they're black. That's what some American told me yesterday anyway.

I've been unlucky enough to be involved in a huge overseas crisis resulting in mass destruction and it's not as easy at it seems, logistics intervene.

For example the easiest way to distribute the aid in Haiti is via the port which has been destroyed.

Have to get heavy equipment landed on the country to clear roadways of debri.. It's not easy by any means... I was down in Katrina doing search and rescue with the Ohio National guard and with all the panic it's hard to get anything done..sad really..

NEW DELHI — The U.S. military is sending additional ships to help with earthquake recovery in Haiti, including one that could remove debris blocking the main port.
Defense Secretary Robert Gates has signed orders sending a port-clearing ship with cranes to Port-au-Prince. It would remove debris that is preventing many larger ships from docking, holding up the delivery of vital food and other relief.
Gates, who's in India, says the ship could help get the port back in operation within a week or two.
Meanwhile, the Pentagon says the hospital ship USNS Comfort has received its first Haitian patients. A 6-year-old boy and 20-year-old man, both severely injured, were flown by Navy helicopter from the aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson to the hospital ship as it streamed toward Haiti.
The nearly 900-foot floating hospital is expected to arrive near Port-au-Prince today. The Comfort left Baltimore on Saturday, carrying about 550 medical staff and about 60 civilian mariners.

The USNS Comfort arrived today with 1,000 beds and 600 medical personnel, bringing the total U.S. medical military support in the area to about 1,500.

The aid will last as long as it's needed, Merrick said.

It arrived on Tuesday!

2,000-strong unit of U.S. Marines began moving ashore west of Port-au-Prince at dawn on Tuesday to help deliver relief to victims of last week's earthquake.

President Obama signed an executive order over the weekend allowing members of the reserves to be called up to support the relief efforts in Haiti, where the U.S. military on Sunday bolstered the flow of troops and humanitarian aid.
About 5,000 U.S. military personnel were already assisting on the ground and from ships nearby, and four Navy ships and an additional 7,500 personnel were scheduled to arrive today, according to U.S. Southern Command.

There is no need to cheapen the thread with off topic remarks. I do realise that its not easy, I am unsure how uneasy. I woudn't be surprised if some people were making the remarks above. But my exasperation is that we're not even talking about roads as yet because they can't get the stuff out of the airport !!!

I would venture that theAmerican's et al are big hearted, but were totally unprepared for this scale of disaster where (no pun intended), the country has literally and figuratively callapsed.

But I don't know. Instead of saying, its all technical, perhaps they would help themselves by explaining the difficulties a bit more, as in the issue with the ports.

Don't set the Angels on me man. I was just passing on a ludicrous comment.

Chico, as always, your safe man. So long as we don't talk about hamsters (y)

PS What is wrong with pineapple on pizza, I have it all the time with anchovies. Only way to eat pizza (y) (and a totally different thread topic)

Weird that.

I just had a Subway and mistakenly put a rubber ear phone in my mouth thinking it was a rogue anchoive that had burst for freedom from my sandwich.

I soon realised my mistake.
