"My players are risking their lives out there"(Wolves away 3-0 defeat 78-79,icy,snowy pitch),"If I wanted to see a clown,I'd go to the bloody circus"(Duncan McKenzie)Happy Birthday to the Screaming Skull!!

I liked Gordon Lee. Hard working teams he built but also quite free scoring. He did have a little money to spend and when that was stopped he had to bring youth in and although it was potentially a decent team they just couldn't last the pace of a season. Bought some good players Graeme sharp being one.

Happy birthday Gordon.

Good summary that. People associate Gordon Lee with dourness, but his teams were set up to score a lot of goals. I can remember some fantastic games in his first couple of years in charge. He was much more attack minded than Moyes, that's for sure.

I went to Goodison more times to see Lee's team than I did to see any subsequent manager's teams. First couple of seasons were pretty good (3rd and 4th) but the last couple pretty dire with good cup runs (18th and 15th in league, semi and qf in cup)
Started off with Latchford and McKenzie up front and ended with Kidd and Eastoe.

Thinking about it I probably still live in those days of Bingham and Lee Evertonians of all generations simply didn't entertain the idea any were bigger or better than us, not Liverpool, Utd, Arsenal none of them. It mattered not a jot we won eff all we were Everton no more to be said.

When we were crap we'd howl the place down throw cushions might not even go for a few weeks. Then some upstart club like Leeds running away with the league would turn up and the place would be heaving with indignation, if you were late you wouldn't get in.

The opposition used to warm up on such days looking around sheepishly as if they'd been bussed into Vietnam. What a place Goodison was in those days and our away support (which is still great) was akin to the Mongols razing europe to the ground following Ghengis Khan.

Gordon tried but our heritage burnt in our hearts like a raging inferno the school of science, Dixie, holy Trinity, golden vision defined us, Liverpool were the long ball team.

Happy birthday Gordon I used to call you for selling Duncan but in hindsight if we'd won that final against Villa think what might have been. Good luck lad.
