He got them relegated. That can't in any way be a positive thing, surely? It will take a lot to get Wigan back to where they were.

Don't think WB was saying for one minute that their relegation was positive. However saying ''he got them relegated'' makes it sound like they wouldn't have gone down with another manager. Fact is there's a good chance they would have gone down a season or 2 earlier without Martinez. And fair chance they wouldn't have won the cup.
