Greatest player you've seen

Saint Domingo

Player Valuation: £90m
The sad passing of Johan Cruyff got me thinking: who is the greatest player you have ever seen and why?

It doesn't have to be that you saw them live, but you must have seen them on tv 'live' at least (basically their playing career was during your lifetime). You also don't have to 'prove' that they are the greatest. It can be for entirely sentimental or personal reasons that you consider a certain player to be greater than another even if cold hard stats may prove otherwise. Mods please feel free to merge with another thread if best to do so.

The greatest player I've ever seen? For me it's Zidane. The reason being that he was playing at a time of some truly great footballers. Ronaldo, Figo, Makelele Davids Petit Bergkamp Totti Nedved etc. Yet despite this in big games he often seemed like a god on a different level to all of them even those in his own teams of the Galacticos and his great France side. Even in 2006 when he was near his end he still weaved magical powers over that World Cup. I've never seen anyone influence the outcome of big games and big moments as much as he did. His control was brilliant and he didn't even have the pace so many top players rely on.

Many might say Messi and whilst his numbers are astounding and he's probably the most consistent player of all time, for me he's not been able to impact those big moments on the international level that leave those sentimental images for all time. I've also always seen Messi as the jewell in the Barca crown as in a brilliant player at the forefront of a team of great players such as Iniesta Xavi etc. Zidane also played with great players for France Vieira Petit Henry Makelele Desailly Pires, yet he just seemed to be on a different stratosphere to them. When the big moments were needed some of the best players of all time always looked to Zidane.

The Best.

Had the pleasure of seeing Johan Cruyff play albeit towards the end of his career and would put him right up there with the very, very best.
I think one could choose a whole squad of "greats" as how can you really compare a Cruyff to a Big Nev?
Selecting an eleven greats you've actually seen play live might be an interesting comparison of opinions.

Who impacted you the most though? Gave you that moment that made you think 'this is the greatest player I have ever seen'? No worries if there isn't one.

Oooh, now there's a question to ponder on.
And I honestly don't think I could narrow it down to a one moment of magic choice.
There are dozens of great, great players that I've seen in the flesh so to speak and leaving aside foreign players for a wee while, let me name a few... George Best at his peak was a joy to watch, Alan Ball, does one need superlatives about Bally?
The Holy Trinity as a midfield unit were out of this world to my mind, Jimmy Greaves and Denis Law were supreme goal scorers, Rodney Marsh on his day was electrifying as was Stan Bowles.
I used to go up to Celtic a lot when I was younger and forgive me this, but Dalglish was terrific to watch. Frank Worthington was a bit special too...
The list of players who could be considered greats is endless... Great fun pondering though eh?

As for a magical moment... let me run this one past you...
Do you remember the Fellaini turn that made Craig Bellamy look a complete donkey, now that was a magical moment, but you wouldn't put Felli in an all-time great team would you?
Like I said, if you tried to name an eleven you would struggle massively even from Brits alone as you could probably pick at least three players for every position.

Take goalies alone... Banks, Shilton, West, Southall, Jennings, Clemence... There's just six !
See what I mean...
We'll be here for hours debating this...
Makes a refreshing change from the El Bob threads though :)

I have seen George Best playing in Belfast, for sheer charisma there has been nothing to touch him. I seen Cruyff but he was so shackled he never got going. On a one off appearance I saw Michael Ballack play the best individual game, he looked faster, stronger than anyone around him.
But to see George Best playing in Windsor Park was an experience, when he got the ball people moved forward and strained in anticipation.

The only one that belongs in that debate. Even though Pele did more things than Diego, I think Diego just pipped him.
We'll have to agree to disagree on this as for me, Pele is the one.
Maradona was great, but is tainted by the handball 'goal' against England... and it wasn't just because it was against England either. To me, that was just plain wrong.
