Greatest guitar riff of all time?

For Hendrix, be sure to specify Voodoo Chile (Slight Return) or you are possibly referencing the wrong song. This is probably my favorite rock riff, though will think more on it.

For metal, I have to go with Slayer, the opening riff to "Raining Blood" sounds like, in the immortal words of reality tv show contestant Calvin Tran,

Layla by Derek & The Dominoes is a good shout. The piano version from Goodfellas is one of my favourite pieces of music ever.

Seven Nation Army is good if that's a riff, especially on a night out. Ruined slightly by all the football clubs who play it when they score, the bad melts.

I grew up on Zeppelin and they are by far, my favorite band of all time.

That said, I never, ever liked Whole Lotta Love. Never. I know it's one of the top songs of the band when you poll fans but for me, I just never liked it at all.

Give me Immigrant Song over Whole Lotta Love all day long and twice on Sunday.
The live stuff with Jimmy Page and the Black Crows is brilliant if you've ever heard it?

Me too Bill.

A lot of the choices were good intro's rather than good riffs.
Indeed. Even #2, Sweet Child O Mine, is basically just an intro. A true riff needs to be present through the song. Back In Black, Whole Lotta Love etc.

'How Soon Is Now' really baffled me. That's not even a riff, its just a guitar effect played through the song.

They had to squeeze a non heavy rock band in there somewhere.

Where was 'Over the Hill with the Swords of a Thousand Men' by Tenpole Tudor if we're just going to go with an effects pedal and to notes.
