Great piece on Timmy Cahill

You can tell from that that he was a big reason and a big part as to why we had such a great spirit and togetherness at Everton!. Seems a really nice bloke, top stuff.

Quick story, I spent most of the last decade working in Singapore. Back in June 2007 the Aussies were competing in the AFC Asian Cup for the first time (having switched confederations from Oceania), and were going to be in Singapore for 10 days prior for a training camp. I emailed the club in April that year asking could we have Tim for an evening with the local Everton fans. He had one of his metatarsal injuries at the time, so it was touch and go as to whether he'd even make the squad.

Anyway the club said I had to speak to the Aussie Footy Federation, but they'd mentioned it to Tim and he was keen (that was what I wanted - you'll see why!). So I contacted the Aussies, and they came back with a quick reply, which was a "no way, mate". I understood their reasons - it was to prepare for a major tournament, they weren't doing press events etc. So I left it.

Couple of weeks before they arrived, my mobile rings. I answer. "You effing c word. You got to him didn't you?" I played dumb, didn't know what they were talking about etc. etc. Anyway, turns out our Tim had told the Aussie management that he was going to do our little event. They tried to make it difficult. I needed a security plan. Provided. Transport for Tim and their entourage. Provided (local head of BMW was a big Blue, so chauffeur driven cars no problem).

We had a great night. Fans flew in from Indonesia and Malaysia. We were 90 mins late starting as the Aussies had a team meeting in the hotel. I'd agreed to keeping it to just 30 mins, but as I met Tim in the lobby, someone in the entourage told me "just make sure he's back by midnight".

Tim was an absolute star. We had a lot of laughs, he spoke with great passion about playing for Everton and Australia, and I'm glad I was able to surprise him by reaquanting him with his former babysitter, whom he hadn't seen for nearly 20 years (ironically, her name was Pele!)

But it all happened thanks to someone at Everton having a quiet word with Tim. Thank you Graeme Sharp. I owe you a pint.

Great story SingBlue. Timmy is an Everton legend and one of my favorites of all time. Class act all the way.

I would very much love it if Tim became a part of our coaching set up once he's done at the Red Bulls. Think he'd be brilliant to have around the academy and to do a bit of movement training for the forwards.

Favourite Everton player of the last 10 years

I love the love for Tiger on this thread. Whilst I was in Asia, I had the privilege to appear on ESPN STAR Sports. (360m subsribers across 26 countries). I was asked live on tV who my favourite was. I juggled it in my head (old enough that my first hero was Bobby Latchford - who did walk on water!) and I said Tim.

Immediately I was embarrassed but then got my crap together. And the answer was still Tim.

Nice one for sharing this. A childhood hero of mine, get's what Everton is about and plays like any fan would play like if given the chance. Can't describe how gutted I was when we accepted a bid for him and he left for America, it all happened so quickly.

This in a nutshell.

Great story! My son plays every Saturday at a park in Central London. Anyway one Saturday the whole Aussie squad (they were playing a friendly in London) were walking trough the park with their Gold Aussie training top on. I saw them and ran over to see if Tim was amongst them. He was, so I introduced myself and told him my son was playing on the field next to where they were walking and he had his Everton shirt on with no. 17 Tim Cahill on his back.

Tim was over like a shot, ran onto the pitch and my then 10 year old son met his hero. Funny thing was that Tim was almost as much in awe of my son having his name on his back as my son was in meeting him.

Fast forward a couple of months and we're standing outside Craven Cottage waiting for the Everton coach to arrive. Tim comes off the coach, sees my son and remembers his name. Amazing, a great guy and a great servant of the club.

Of the modern era, Tim and Baines stand out as players with integrity, loyalty to their club and with an understanding of their place in the mind and hearts of supporters, young and old alike.

Would love to see Tim back at the club in some form of role in the future.

Great great story and somehow, doesn't surprise me in the least.
