Government spending 2bn to snoop on our online behaviour

This kind of information could be very dangerous if it fell into the wrong hands too. Look at the tapping affair with the newspapers, it only takes a leak, and judging by the cosy relationship the government and Murdoch's papers seem to have, it's not that far fetched.

It's the tip of the iceberg it seems. In the last few months we've had Pirate Bay blocked by ISPs, the desire from MPs to be able to 'turn off' social media during a riot, and Cameron wants to automatically block adult sites unless you opt-in to using them.

The web works so well because it is such a free place. Governments should [Poor language removed] and leave it be.

Exactly right, the interwebz is a huge source of information, and it only gets bigger.

The general public (at least in "the West") has never had so much info' available to them before and all at the touch of a fkn button.

Admittedly though, anything can be posted/uploaded at anybody's free will, books need to be proof read prior to publication, stuff on the web however, doesn't.

Knowledge is power. Our overlords would rather not have that kind of power in the hands of us, the baying mob.

Someone posted earlier, the only real safety issue is the safety of the Government themselves. Is spot on.

It was only a matter of time before the policing started.
