THat and Hollywood dumps far too much money into some movies, if they flop it destroys them financially.
Lone Ranger, anyone:
Budget:
$215,000,000 (estimated)
Opening Weekend:
$29,210,849 (USA) (5 July 2013)
Gross:
$89,289,910 (USA) (4 October 2013)
(Anchorman 2, another unnecessary sequel, apparently grossed $2.7m... weeeee)
So yeah, everything they do just follows a blueprint and uses prior successful franchises in an effort to pull on the name brand. It will just burn them out even faster when you have Hulk, Hercules, Spiderman, Superman reboots coming in shorter and shorter cycles. This will just burn the names out and drive less and less interest.
Never mind the moviegoing experience is expensive and ultimately crap nowadays. HD tvs and home theater surround systems mean a great experience without paying $20 for a ticket, a small popcorn and a thimble full of soda.
Honestly, though, I think I can count on my fingers the number of movies I've seen at the theater in the past decade.
TV has replaced movies for interesting viewing.
