European football's governing body Uefa is considering ditching the Europa League in favour of extending the Champions League from 32 to 64 teams.

"We're discussing it. We will make a decision in 2014. Nothing is decided yet," Uefa president Michel Platini told French newspaper Ouest-France.

It means seven English clubs and five Scottish teams could qualify for European football's elite competition.

Uefa are looking at changing the format of European competitions from 2015.

"There is an ongoing debate to determine what form the European competitions will have between 2015 and 2018," added Platini.

The former France international said he was not worried by talk of Europe's richest clubs forming a competition to rival the Champions League.

"It's a question that is regularly brought up," he said.

"I can't see how it could work outside the Uefa framework. Who will referee them? In what stadiums will they play?"

I heard they are gonna give Brenda's philosophy a chance to work and if it hasn't by 2014 they are gonna change the rules again so that the kopites don't kick off about missing out on qualification.........just what I heard like.

ill say my thoughts in ere as well.

I think we should leave the Champions League alone, its not broken. it works well.

we should scrap the Europa League and turn it back into the Europa Cup. (64/128 teams) cup draw.. 2 legs. winner of the cup get a automatic place in the champions league. you will see all side taking it serious then!

the only sides who dont take it seriously are the english sides. Because the money isnt that great.

If the league format is ok for the CL then why not for the Europa League? The whole point of the league format is to provide a bit more recognition, interest and money for the teams in the Europa League. That's worked compared to the Cup system.

The problem is the financial gulf between the CL to the EL and domestics. To bridge that gap you need mega rich owners. If the competition money was sorted out, then you wouldn't be as reliant on mega rich owners, you'd just need a good team to make the stepping stone that should be the EL, from domestic to CL.

Due to the poor money given out to the EL, clubs are reluctant to get better squads to cope with the extra matches in the EL. So they decide between either the domestic or EL. The Domestic wins, leading to not full strength teams leading to some devaluing it.

Champions League shouldn't be changed. It works well. The Europa League would also work if UEFA would spend more money. They should just double the financial spending for the EL and the bigger clubs will take it more seriously.

It would level the playing field a bit, although I'm sure someone will pop up and tell me it wouldn't. If these 4 extra teams indeed had one off matches against the better european teams, on the night there could well be surprises and early knockouts. It would only take a few of these to make the champions league more likely for more teams.

So they ain't content with ruining the european cup by dragging it out into a tedious league format. Now they wanna ruin the Uefa cup too. Good one.
