Watched the first episode the other day thought it was decent but that gun fight went on far too long and sounded like a full scale army attack, or do such gun battles happen in Italy like that?

Yes they made a film based on the book and saviano expanded to make a TV series . Which is better than the book and film

This is a great show. Love Naples and Napoli so this is like watching Wish You Were Here for me. The film was good too.
