Bruce Wayne

Player Valuation: £100m
One of the things that impressed me when Wessels came into the side was that he always looked for a quick throw, and only when that wasn't on did he kick long.

Howard was similar when he first arrived at the club. Yesterday however I didn't see him build from the back once, and his long kicks seldom resulted in us gaining the ball.

Do you think this is down to the keepers or is it something Moyes is telling them to do?

This is eaxctly what I picked up on last night, similarly no surging runs from Lescott. I think after that fiasco between Howard and Lescott something might have been said. In addition whilst I am quite happy for Howard to play on I would like to see Wessells again.

Yes, I think so too. Wessells impressed me a lot when he came into the side and I thought him unfortunate to be dropped. I think in many ways the two key positions when teams want to play good, passing football are goalie and defensive midfielder. We don't really have much choice with Carsley at the moment but I'm sure Ferguson would have had Howard throwing short a lot at United rather than big boots so he has it in him.

I remember well in the older days, Gordon West was a great one for sensible throw outs rather than kicks.

If done properly can set the team off in an attack and of course manitains possession.

To quote a certain Mr Shankly " If you have the ball the opposition cannot score".

Who was it that said something along the lines of "The object of football is to get the ball into the oppositions goal area - so that's why we kick it up to our strikers"

No, the object of football is to get the ball in the other teams net! not the penalty area that does not win games.

I know I know, but I remember some reporter once asking a manager why they continually hoofed the ball and he replied something along that. It might have been "the object is to score goals and you do that more easily from the oppositions goal area..."

He made some great saves and was good with his kicking if he throws it to hibbo/yobo/stubbs/neville they usally hoof it anyway. so he might as well do it. stops goals like against larissa happening.

I actually thought Tim Howard was great with his feet last night. He cleared really well with either foot and was composed on teh ball. Did well I thought

In the sense that he made great contact with the ball each time then sure, his kicking was great. But as has been noted in the match day thread, Yak wasn't winning many headers so the long kicks were generally gifting possession back to them.

What stops goals like against Larissa happening is the defender not being asleep ;)

I actually think you are being a bit unfair Bruce- of the times he had it passed back to him last night he probably had only one opportunity to play it short. I would much rather my keeper get it as far away as possible from the goal than risk giving it away in a position where their attack could easily be in.

I think we should all be used to the fact we are a long ball team the majority of the time, and it frustrates the hell out of me. We have talented players who are more than capable of playin attractive football on the floor we just dont see it happen enough.

pienaar played howard into pressure last night, he had to chest/knee the ball to gain control and smash it quickly as an attacker was almost on top of him.

there was too much hoofing of the ball though, and i only recall lescott rampaging through the midfield once, he was fouled and i think the culprit subbed almost instantly.

howard made some important stops, and that defensive slip by lescott showed he was concentrating a lot because he was leopard like in his reactions and pouncing on the ball.

I dont really think its just the goalie that needs looking at, the whole back 4 need to consider holding onto possesion and play it across the back 4 occasionally and work an opening into midfield so that the creative guys can get the ball at their feet. This is something that will take time for the players to adapt to, more than anything though its having the confidence to do this in a match situation
