Glentoran fans to boycott Cliftonville game over refugee donation.

God knows I have often felt like "boycotting" EFC games but never would I think anyone would boycott their team's game over a one quid charity donation.

Shame on these "fans".
Would certainly be more of a story if a full house at the Emirates or OT failed to turn up on such grounds.
No disrespect to Glentoran or Cliftonville, but what would be the best expectation for the attendance ?

Oops.......wrong forum.

Would a moderator please move this to World Football and delete this particular post, please :)

Thank you.

Four or five thousand I suppose, Block.

But the smaller teams can only do what they can and if the big teams made a similiar gesture then a lot of dough could be raised.

Couldn't agree more Khal, so this now begs the question have our Irish friends in effect thrown down the "let's do something on the back of the ridiculous and obscene amounts of money sloshing around in football" gauntlet to at least the Premiership clubs ?

I forsee this getting moved to World Football

But yeah, it seems a bit overly melodramatic

It's only £1 at the end of the day

I can understand choice butb this feels unreasonable

I don't like to play this card but unfortunately in NI sectarianism is never far from the surface.
Cliftonville have a predominantly Nationalist fan base and Glentoran are Unionist. That could definitely be a factor in not co-operating?
Also, seems to be a fair amount of racism and homophobia in NI (on both sides), maybe as a hang over from the "Troubles" and general lack of tolerance. Here's an interesting article :-

The sad thing is I have always liked the Glens.

The Golden Vision went to play for them when I was young and I went to The Oval for a pre season friendly the year Beardsley signed for us.

We were very well received by the fans in the pub before and after the game.

As always, the actions of the few can tarnish the image of the many.

Having been offered a trial by Glentoran in my youth and having seen them play on numerous occasions I have to say their fans are as good as any football fans. My son was at Cliftonville for a short while and my grandson has just played a few games for their under 15 team so again I feel I can speak with some authority on their fans, again I have always found them to be a reasonable bunch.
Football here has been through bad times, Derry City for one, but all through the Troubles it kept going, that is a testament to the game here.
I don't agree with protesting about donating to a good cause but in the scale of things football fans do, is it that bad.
I would also say it is a bit rich football fans from England pointing the finger at Northern Irish football fans for being homophobic, racist or bigoted.

What a disgrace. I'd understand if they were being asked for an extra £1 but the donation is part of the normal entrance price. There is no logical reason to object to it whatever your views are on the refugee crisis. You have to wonder if this would have happened if it wasn't Cliftonville they were playing.
