I need to give notice to leave my job on 2nd Jan, but I'm off from tomorrow until 5th Jan. 5th Jan would mean less than the required notice period before my new job start date in Feb.

If I give notice today, can I forward-date it to 2nd Jan? Or would it me telling them today mean my notice would start today? I need to make sure the two line up so I don't miss out on wages.

Post it around 27-28th Dec and date the actual letter 2nd January making it clear that you had in your notice period commencing that day.

Thought this was a leaving thread ffs!

I would tell them today, saying this is effective from 2nd Jan 2015. (get the year right!). Put a note along the line of "due to holidays/firm closure/leave, I am giving you advanced notice of my notice period"

Tell them today that you are giving notice from 2nd January. Shouldn't be a problem.

Although personally, I think you should do this:

Dear Brendon,

As responsible employers we already have a replacement lined up, so the notice period is actually not an issue. In fact given recent performances it might be best if you leave now, this will give Kennny and Graeme a couple of days before our next game. It will also look better on the CV that we're still in the FA Cup this season.

Don't worry YNWA, we look after our own just like we did with Shanks.

Starting to feel badly nervous about all this. Seems the entire HR department is out of the office. I could swing this their way and they probably won't get it til after Christmas anyway.

Sod it, I'm gonna send it about 4.30 then run away.

Have you been paid for December?

Send it now lid and tell them you wanted to give them additional notice to find a replacement. Its no big thing, they'll have someone trained up for that drive thru in no time.

Yes but that's not the issue. Notice submitted and accepted today means my last day (by the letter of the law, 4 weeks notice) would be 20th Jan. That's 9 days til I start my new job. That's a lot of days not to be paid for. I need to make sure it all ties in with no loss of wage.

If you're worried about 9 days without pay just whack your entire last paycheck on a Stoke win on Boxing day, then you're guaranteed the cash and also 9 days off to relax.

The cold paella was the final straw wasn't it?
