I will be arriving in Liverpool about 3:00 on Jan 1st, and have a hotel in the docks area. What would be the best way to get to Goodison from there? I'm assuming taxis will be extortionate, is there likely to be scheduled public transport I could use?

Cue the first champ to advise you to 'get a ride' at The Lisbon.
Uber?
Enjoy :)

Surely the buses will be on from the centre, they have a special match day service bus on the road next to the World Museum, Big museum you wont be able to miss it.

be mindful new years day as United fans are pretty notorious for taking over some pubs in Liverpool and their behaviour is not always the best,

If not the 19 Bus will be running Liverpool Queens square bus station stand 8, pretty regular service that stops right outside the ground

AM OR PM? Youll have a bit of a wait to book into your hotel if its 3 in the morning. Some pubs will still be open though.

not exactly related but under the same umbrella, I used to hate living in Allerton

every boxing day I would be stood at penny lane waiting for the 68 to come, and after an hour (every time) realising that the 68 isn't included in the limited service that day and having to leg it to town often late by that point!
