Getting the cane at school

...I was good at school but I still got the cane. Even in the juniors, Miss Murphy would give you a clip over the head or a right old smack on the leg (we all wore short trousers). It was just normal.
In Senior School, I remember the gym teacher, Mr Walker, was so miffed at folk not bring their games kit he lined about 50 lads up in the yard and smacked them all on the arse with a training shoe.

Banned caning the year or so before I began teaching. Certainly would've used it, saved paperwork, saved arguing, saved persistent disruption, saved careers, saved mental breakdowns amongst colleagues. We probably wouldnt have an issue with knife crime and youth culture now if kids were taught to respect what their elders said with a dose of the slap.
I was caned when i deserved it and i made sure i avoided a repeat. I dont resent having being caned one bit.

I think we are too far gone to re-introduce it now, well we defo are, but national service could be worth a look into!

Got it few times once after the toilets had been painted decided to wrote my name and EFC of course in 2foot letters wasn't the cane thou size 12 Dunlop green flash pumps teacher was obs a proper scruff

Got the cane a few times in school, we used to hope to get sent to the headmaster because he was crap at it, he used to miss your finger tips by inches and then you would pretend he had hit you and scream out and I remember like it was yesterday he used to say " and let that he a lesson to you boy"

For what it´s worth the overwhelming majority of kids I´ve taught are brilliant and generally the ones that aren´t come from very troubled backgrounds, living lives that you wouldn´t wish on your worst enemy. Me giving them a slap isn´t going to change whatever pathway they´re on in life.
It would be nice to think we could solve society´s ills with something so simplistic but we can´t.

Certainly some may have. Then again some police abuse their powers, some judges theirs, doctors theirs, most MPs theirs - there are dodgy and unstable characters in all walks if life. They all get sacked if they're found out (apart from MPs who get a knighthood) Its people who are the problem not the allowing teachers to cane.
