....what does this phrase mean?

There is a lot of talk about our next manager, and talk of our most recent managers. The criticism we hit them with is that they don't "get Everton' what does this mean to us? Do you have to have played for us to get us? If this is the case we are limiting our managers. Is it possible that we only see the players/staff that 'get Everton' are the successful ones.

It is very unlikely that anyone from another country will understand us I think. I think times have changed and we find it comfortable to look back on the days of loyal players and staff. Am I wrong here, or missing something?

You 'get' what the fans want.

What style of play, what fans expect, the right things to say to please the fans/get on side with the fans. But don't go down the Martinez route of trying to continue to say those things when we know and can see they're different.

It's a simple concept to grasp really.

Honesty - don't patronise the fans
Ambition - even if we aren't ready to challenge make sure that we're working towards it.
Talent - no dross please but if you aren't the best player then at the very least...
Hard work - every player puts a shift in because if you don't then you can be sure that we'll tell you that you aren't.
Always aim to win.
Never admit defeat (look at Niasse on Sunday - that's why he's turning into a cult figure).
Never allow the opposition to bully you.

There's loads more like but be arsed spelling it all out.

It's more than that. Certain clubs have a status and a quality that justifies a respect and places them above others. Part history, part style, part success, part myth. Very few have it and to be authentic it is earned over time and not purchased on a whim. Everton certainly have it. I personally would include Arsenal and Tottenham. Chelsea and Man City definitely don't.

if you even have to ask, then you don’t get it.

And this,

I think it means understanding the fans expectations of how you need to play. With Everton we exist in a goldfish bowl environment of being one of 2 clubs, in a huge city where football is everywhere. Some people thrive under that enviroment while others suffocate.

In fairness to him, although it didn't work out for him in the end, Martinez at least tried to understand the club. He went out of his way to acknowledge the clubs history and appreciated where we were in the past. It felt that with Koeman, he saw us as inferior and lucky to have him.

That's the difference. It didn't turn out for either of them, but one tried to become part of the club while he was here, whilst the other just used us to try and get to where he wanted to be. As a player comparison, think of Cahill and Lukaku.
