Player Valuation: £6m
Ok ashley cole is still decent but gerrard said he would retire from international football at the end of the euros, it was only until he noticed he has 96 caps he said he will remain as captain.

Its obvious for anyone to see he will get his 100 caps and then retire, pretty pointless only to play for 3 or 4 more months just to get a milestone.

the 5 players that have that milestone are billy wright, bobby moore, bobby charlton, peter shilton and becks

gerrard wont be captain for the next world cup so whats going on here.

nasser hussain left himself stranded on 96 because he could see other players coming through, team man right there, you either wanna be at the next world cup or do one with a bit of dignity

Bet you he does'nt. He is playing on cause he is our captain and probably one of our best players. oops not allowed to say though though cause i support Everton and probably was OUR player of the tournament

I hadn't realized Gerrard had said he would retire, in fact I thought before the Euros started he had intimated he would like to be at the next World Cup.

No doubt the media will convince him to stay, having already raved about his performances despite them being so-so. It doesn't seem likely he will play in the Champions League for a few years - if ever again - so this will be a chance to play at the 'highest level'.

Really England need a fresh start without the likes of Lampard, Gerrard, Terry, Cole and some of the average younger players who made the most recent squad. Though the previously mentioned may be able to offer something in the short term, it would be best to build a team for the World Cup and give them stability for two years. But I doubt that it will happen.

Being England's best player at that tournament (which he wasn't, anyway) is a bit like being the most virile person in an old people's home. It sounds impressive and you get it lord it over your mates but in the end you still can't manage a semi and Jermaine is probably banging your missus and your daughter at the same time.

It inst really Gerrards choice, is it? He had an OK tournament, probably one of our better performers over all 4 games, but Roy might decide to play a young side for the next friendly, then take a look at the WC quallies.

Dont think he will, BTW, but I dont mind Gerrard reaching 100 caps, its just a bit off suggesting that it is down to him.

Oh, and on Cole, while it is debatable about Gerrards contribution to England versus his undoubted talent, Cole is still not only the best RB in England, by a mile, he is arguably one of very, very few current England players who you could make a case for being in
a "Euro 2012 11"

Coming up next on TalkSport: should Roy have took Paul Scholes to the Euros.

Ha ha, you know it mate. Loads were giving him grief for not taking Joe Cole and Rio Ferdinand, FFS. The media are so up the arses of the 2002 squad that even the smallest change is met by screams of outrage from melts like TalkSport.

The last decent England team was in 1996 mate. Good team that.
