Anyone on here ever researched their family tree/history?

I know nothing beyond grand parents so thinking of doing it but I'd imagine it's tedious getting into all the detail. Can anyone recommend a genealogist? (Note: genealogist, not gynaecologist...)

Where do you live? PM me. I have done mine and can probably help you with internet sites.

I did a bit, well my sister more, but I helped. Tons of stuff online.

In the end, we found some lad had already done it!

Had an uncle that traced my mums side back to 1066 and the Norman Invasion. Was in the doomsday book as a Norman knight and landholder as well.

I don't know if it's still the case, but the last time I used the public record office in Picton library they had a list of researchers names based at the library who know their way around the data kept there and you could pay them a fee to do the leg work for you.

I know the place has been revamped in the last couple of years so don't know if that system still prevails, I suspect it does though.

My sister did ours, but being immigrant peasants it was impossible to get back much our grandparents parents.
As a member of the aristocracy I'd have thought you'd have been able to get one of your staff to do this for you. I'd recommend @micknick for this sort of stuff.

As an aside, I had a phone call from Hoopers ( the hier hunters from telly ) a couple of months ago. A long lost relative whose parents has emigrated to the States in the 40's had popped their clogs and they were trying to trace their descendants, of whom my old man was one. We googled the old dear and she was probably worth a seven figure USD sum.

Needless to say, we're get jack all, it'll go to some relatives in Aus. I'd never taken much notice of the stuff my sis had done till that phone call, but it all became much more exciting then.

My dads been doing it online.

You can just search through death records and birth records and stuff.

The most exciting bit was when we discovered one of my cousins was secretly a british spy.

As opposed to openly ?
Sorry, pedantry and genealogy sound similar.

He probably isn't really.

He's about the same age as my dad and they knew each other growing up. He works out in china for some big tech company.

And according to the death records we found, he died when he was six months old. So blatantly he's really a british spy.

I've been doing mine for about 6 years. It's an ongoing process, so I view it as more of a "project that I'll never finish". It's fab though once you get going.

So far I'm back to mid 1600's on a couple of branches. The further you go, the longer it takes to find stuff but it's still fascinating along the way.

I use a combination of websites, (Ancestry [which is subscription] and Familysearch [which is free {Mormon-run}]). Also, many visits to Liverpool Central Library to look for certificates is great fun. The key is not to limit yourself to one source, use as many reliable ones as you can. Also important is to research facts properly - too many folk simply latch on to the first name that will vaguely fit their family and misguidedly think it's the correct relative, when often it isn't and more thorough research is required.

I've been fortunate enough to find what UK Navy ships my direct ancestors were on (First World war, and Americal Civil war times), and where they lived here in the city and tons of other fab stuff. I've been to graves of long deceased relatives that were right under my nose too. It's fab.

I've access to ancestry, so if you want a helping hand starting off, fire me a PM.
