Geeky MP3 question

Im not the most technically gifted so I thought I would ask you guys out there. My mobile phone pklays MP3's like most do these days.

Through I Tunes I download music. I want to put some tunes onto my phone but my phone wont play them as they are MP4's is there anyway I can convert them to MP3's so I can put it onto my phone?

ISNT MP4 VIDEO ? my old phone played mp4's and recorded mp4's and it was video.

Apple blocks you using anything downloaded off itunes in any other mp3 than ipod, just get a converter its the only way to put them on your phone. Alternatively just go to a torrent site and download the original mp3 files for free then transfer to your phone, much easier and much, much cheaper cos its free (y)
