Have asked on a car website but they are crap so will ask on here...

Whats the score when it becomes difficult to change gears? This morning it was a much bigger effort to put the car into any gear - almost as if I have to grind the gears a bit

Now, as a2bchris and chico will agree - good arl frogger isn't the best of cars but its served me well and it would be a sad day the day it goes so treat this thread with the respect it deserves. A good friend is in a bad way here....

I barely know anything about cars but I think part of the gearbox can be lubricated if it becomes like that, worth looking into because I think it's a fairly straightforward job

Have you got to push the clutch pedal right down to the floor to get in gear?

Nope. Just a much bigger effort to change gear and it makes a hefty noise when put it into reverse

That doesnt sound too clever mate. Normally when a clutch is going it bites really low down. In other words you can push the pedal to the floor and hear the gears gring when you try to select 1st. You can have the same problem when a clutch cable becomes stretched. Doesnt sound like either of them mate. What car is it and how many miles has it done?

Its getting on like, 80,000. Will take it to a garage an Tuesday and see how it goes. I have been quoted around £165 for a new clutch if thats the problem, which I suspect it will be...

My gearbox is getting a bit iffy at the moment as well, must be that time of year!

Sometimes it goes into 1st easy, others it just will not go so its back into neutral and try again.

Hoping it will last out till MOT time in Feb!

Gearbox is dearer, not by much, but its a bigger labour charge. BUT, it could be something cheap, like fluid or even just the clutch gone, but normally with a clutch, it gets worse over time.
