Gay and Bisexual footballers

Everyone is quick to point out the likes of Megan Rapinoe and Robbie Rogers when it comes to gay footballers, but that's because they are affiliated with US soccer. The culture differences of US soccer and European football is like the difference between City and Newcastle. US soccer players, fans are more civilised, when it comes to the demographics of the followers. Soccer is a middle-class sport in the US, which is very popular in the college system. So yes, your average fan is a lot more educated in the US. On the other hand, the culture of football over in Britain or in Europe, is toxic and rotten. You have clubs getting fined for homophobia, antisemitism, racism, misogny on a regular basis. The average football fan here is stereotyped as unsophisticated, while this is just a stereotype, it holds some truth.

To answer the question, no I don't expect this "so-called" footballer to be well received or welcomed. Football is still 100 years behind society, here in Britain or in Europe overall.

it would seem to me the appropriate reading of that is that people are made to feel it is something they should hide.

Having lived in Brighton for 20 odd years. Its a bit obvious when I am in the company of homosexuals, Lesbians and all those who fit in between. It would be difficult to do and a great shame if this was necessary.

I dont get why this is even an issue ??
Where you put your privates is no ones business. If its law abiding who actually cares nowadays.
The whole coming out thing...I have never really understood it to be honest. My neighbour had this huge coming out statement, the fact she had been living with women for years and we all guessed anyway. Just seemed so "look at me".. we all just said.."er..ok" and carried on with the evening. No one cares in 2019...or really shouldnt. Far more pressing issues going on.

Always remember a comment Morgan Freeman made when asked how to stop racism and he replied "Stop talking about it. I'm gonna stop calling you a white man and I'm gonna ask you to stop calling me a black man".

Racism and homophobia will probably always exist to an extent (certainly for a few more generations) and those views should always be challenged and overcome, but they are nowhere near as prevalent or insidious as they once were in my opinion.

Morgan Freeman has the right idea.

This simply isn’t true, we’re many decades off the point where “no one cares”. Homophobia is still rampant all around the world.
Well it's a sodding waste of anyone's time and energy. This planet has serious issues....preferring the same sex really shouldnt be one. What people do in their bedrooms is their business. Innit.

I just caught the last 5 or 10 minutes of a discussion on Talksport with Jim White about a top level footballer that has apparently come out as gay or bisexual. No names were mentioned but it sounds like it could become public soon if it hasn't already.

I'm just wondering, how accepting do you think football fans in general would be of openly gay or bisexual players? Obviously players get abuse from rival fans for the most trivial of things. Personally I think this would make it a lot harder for them. It shouldn't, but it more than likely will.

Would be great if it was an Everton player. I'd then like to see the club take a lead and normalise the news.
