Back in the 90's, motorcycle and bike couriers were all the rage in Dublin city and they would do the most dangerous things to get to a drop on time. Really p**sed motorists off by pulling inside the left of you to whiz past. I was going through the city one day and I had the music pumping in the car so this guy's screams only dawned on me after a while. I could hear this terrified yelping and I got a shock when I saw this bike courier one hand on the roof rack the other on his handle bars looking through the passanger seat window at me with an expression that I can only describe as absolute horror. What must have happened was he was cutting me up on the left and I'm a bit of a kerb hugger and he simply ran out of space as I was taking off from the lights and grabbed onto the roof rack for support. I doubt I was doing more than 30 mph, but to a cyclist holding on that must feel like jet fuel. I had to gradually slow down as if I slammed on the brakes he'd have come flying off his poxy bike. Long story short, all ended well and I drove off when it was safe for him to let go. In my rear view mirror I saw him get off his bike and stagger to the pavement like a drunk person he was in so much shock. It was one of those times when you start laughing and can't really stop all day because you keep thinking the incident.

As a cyclist when i was a young teenager, i was on my BMX (Falcon Pro Mag Flyer!) i was freewheeling down a hill at max chat when i saw a group of honeys on the other side of the road. i did my best 'nonchalent drop dead gorgeous look' but failed to notice the car i was following had stopped at the lights! BANG stright into the boot, threw me right over the top of the car superman style, i did manage to land the fall into a forward roll. the driver was very concerned but i just wanted to get my bike and get round the corner out of sight of the honeys so i could collapse in pain and embarrassment.

I have a Falcon Flyer in the shed (not the Pro with teardrop/oval tubing) and it has the Bernardi Mags that were probably on yours, Also have a Falcon Freestyle as well but cba changing the wheels over tbh as it has those brakes that are a 'mare to set up and KEEP working correctly.

I just grab my lads Ripper instead if nipping the postbox.

When I was a kid some other kids were gobbing off a bridge at me and my mate Paul as we were riding along. Paul looked up to give them some abuse and rode straight into the back of a parked car, broke his arm and gave himself a fat lip.

He got the piss ripped out of him so badly afterwards.

Cyclists are supposed to ride close to the curb, ie to your left. It's your job to use your mirror to make sure you know what's around you. Sorry bud, but far too many cyclists are killed by vehicles turning left into them for this to be funny.

No its a motorists job to watch out for other vehicles and pedestrians, not some [Poor language removed] on a bike undercutting from the left side. Motorists have enough to worry about without this added hazard. Cyclists cause nothing but trouble.

why does that irritate motorists? most times anyone sitting static on a bike i think `tool, get moving - thats what bikes are for` traffic jams are for knob-heads who are too lazy to walk for the train

Overtaking on the inside though is an offence ?

Get what you are saying like, cos at lights a cyclist isn't gonna wait at the back of the queue (or even stop half of the time), but if a cyclist goes up the inside of cars then he/she knows that they are taking a risk. What if a passenger was to open their door ? I take it you would leave enough of a gap when overtaking so the same sort of gap should need to be available when you go on the inside.

I know cyclists are given little to no regard by motorists, but many cyclists also show little to no regard for the rules of the road. More cycle paths are the answer obviously as 32 tonners and Push-Irons shouldn't really be sharing the same space, what happens then though is that folk use them for walking and cyclist think that they are a pain in the arse for the way they just move to the side unexpectedly as they try to go past them, and string out blocking the way.

It's a cyclist's responsibility to ride defensively and a motorist's responsibility to be aware of everything on the road around them. A bike is another vehicle. A cyclist is always going to come off second best in a collision. It's the responsibility of both to avoid them. You've got two side-mirrors on your car, not hard to check them, is it? And cyclists, if you're going to cut up the inside, do it fecking slowly, and assume motorists might not see you.

right, right and right. stay alert children coz theres always someone not paying attention

i cycle to work, cos its cheaper than a car and its too far to walk, simple! there are some absolute idiot cyclists out there, i tend to stick to cycle paths..but then these get clogged up with women with bloody pushchairs even tho there is a path next to it, there are also some absolute idiot drivers too, i was cycling on a road once(no where else to cycle) and a bus was literally a couple of feet behind me, if i made a slight mistake he would have killed me, had to get off and stop..was pretty scary.

basically there are lots of idiots about cyclists or not

mate, I would've slowed right down in front of it, or mooned the whole bus while riding in a stood up position with them tucked under.

Aye, always better to be safe than sorry. Worth remembering though that a lot of the time if there are bike lanes on the road that they're next to the curb so it does kinda condition you to ride that way. The biggest problem (I've encountered anyway) is cars turning left and not indicating that they're going to do so. Been had off a few times by cars doing that (whilst in a bike lane). You learn after a while to take it easy when near junctions.

One thing I will say though, especially in a big city like London or Dublin, is I reckon it's madness to have music so loud you can't hear things around you. So often see cyclists with headphones in. Save it for the lanes if you've got to listen to music whilst riding, better to be safe when riding in heavy traffic. Same goes for drivers though.

Headphones while driving should be an offence, 1 'bud' ok for a phone, although the amount of cheap alternatives that don't require blocking your ears mean that no real need for using the provided 'hands-free.' Cyclists with headphones in really baffle me tbh as you need to have increased awareness, not reduced.

Also, if you can hear a cars stereo whilst on the path then the driver is committing an offence, not sure if a dvla or noise pollution/ disturbance one though ?
