Watford 0-3 Everton
Everton put their mid-week misery behind them by cruising to a 3-0 win over struggling Watford today. Fernandes, Johnson and Osman provided the goals in a dominant display at Vicarage Road.
The match started brightly with Everton enjoying the best of the early play. After 23 minutes the dead lock was broken. A good Everton move led to a chance for Tim Cahill. His shot from outside the area was blocked by Watford goalkeeper Lee. Johnson and Fernandes raced to the rebound and the Portuguese midfielder prodded the ball home for his first ever Premiership goal.
Moments after the restart Everton were on the attack again. Johnson burst through the Watford defence and into the penalty area. After being tugged back by Mariappa, Jay DeMerit came in with a clumsy challenge and brought Johnson down for a penalty. The England striker insisted that he take the penalty and he didn't disappoint. A diving Lee had no chance as Johnson smashed the ball straight down the middle to send Everton two goals up. In celebration he raised a finger to his lips, a gesture towards those who insist on accusing him of diving, despite evidence suggesting otherwise.
Just three minutes later it could, and should have been 3-0. Tim Cahill ran onto a well executed Beattie flick on, only to loft the ball over Lee, and the crossbar. Just before half time it was Beattie who was guilty of wasting a chance. Johnson unselfishly squared the ball to his strike partner only for Beattie to smash the ball over from all of 6 yards. In truth, the miss was not a fair reflection of a good display from James Beattie who is still waiting for his first goal from open play this season.
Aidy Boothroyd brought on Hungarian international Tamas Priskin at half time, a move that threatened to bring Watford back into the game. For the first twenty minutes of the second half it was Watford who dominated proceedings. Priskin went close on two occasions. First with a well hit shot from 25 yards before a glancing header went agonisingly wide.
Unfortunately for Watford that was as good as it got. As the minutes ticked by Everton looked more and more comfortable, and were happy to protect their two goal advantage.
Substitute Leon Osman ensured the game finished in style. After good hold up play by James Beattie, Osman unleashed a curling left foot strike from 28 yards. Lee was beaten all ends up as the ball flew into the back of the net.
Everton had a point to prove after the Spurs game. They proved it in the best possible manner, a great performance, three goals and crucially three points.
