From England’s finest to dethroned royalty: the rise and fall of Everton since 1985

Never forgive the then Liverpool Secretary (whose name l can neither recall or wish to) blaming the Heysel not on their fans but a general disease within English football. He knew that if the RS got a unilateral ban from Europe then it would put them back years but applying the problem in a generic sense he basically gave Thatcher and the European bodies carte blanche to ban all English clubs. Remember, we had taken 20k plus to Rotterdam just two weeks earlier and l think there were only half a dozen arrests all in Amsterdam and wholly football unrelated.

The majority of the European football media had reckoned Everton were nailed on certainties to dominate Europe for seasons after 1985 but alas due to things outside our control it wasn't to be.

Feel so sorry for the Juve families who lost loved ones - football is not life or death (although it often seems it) but lets not blame it on interlopers from Chelsea or Leeds. We all know the real culprits and that also includes the 'authorities' who decided to squeeze out the extra buck by putting opposing fans in a wholly ill- prepared 'segregated' area.

Peter Robinson.

Great read.

It highlight's how amazing the 1987 win was. We can all name the 11 first team players from '85, and just replace Gray with Linekar in '86. When it comes to '87 though, considering the injuries, lack of proper replacement for Linekar etc, it was a pretty ordinary team that won the league that season.

Were we really all tories in the 50s?
I understand your confusion. Yes, the Tories were the biggest party in the city in the 1950s purely because the working class here still voted along sectarian lines (the Protestant working class tended to vote solidly for their Conservative and Unionist councillors).

However, how he draws the conclusion that the city could have expected a Tory government in the 1980s to ride to its rescue when the place had lost that identity about a quarter of a century earlier beggars belief. No thought's gone into that.

I have Howard Kendall's book. When he left for Spain is when it went wrong. Apparently it started with Barcelona going for Kenny Daglish and Liverpool's chairman said he wasn't available but recommended Kendall. Kendall was obviously up for it but they decided to stay with Venables.

However, he'd decided with no European football, he had won everything with Everton and wanted to test himself. So he went to Athletic Bilbo.

Everton's board decided to go with Colin Harvey, who wasn't quite up to being a manager of a club of the stature at the time. We didn't make any signings at all that summer thinking that we were're good enough. The over the next two season's Steven's and Steven left for Rangers (like that would happen now lol) Peter Reid was getting on and no longer to the standard he had been. Kevin Ratcliffe lost some of his pace. We never seemed to be able to replace these players. We spent a load of money for the time on Cottee (record fee at the time), Nevin, McCall and Neil McDonald (who was awful). The team spirit also was lost. Following a few bad seasons and an awful start to a season Harvey was sacked and Kendall came back. However, the board never backed him as I think the money had ran out.
