Froch v Groves

What's interesting in this 'respect' debate is that it was deemed acceptable and not disrespectful for Froch (as he was champion) to say he would knock Groves out. Yet it was deemed disrespectful for Groves to say he would beat Froch?

Exert from the Telegraph.

“When we were up close, he kept saying to me, ‘I told you so, I told you’.

To be honest I don’t really know what he said because he’s an idiot. He called me ‘a boy’. I said ‘Don’t call me a boy, I’m 11 years older than you so show some respect. It was like being in the playground because he kept repeating boy, boy, boy.”

He is the unified IBF and WBA super-middleweight champion, he deserved more respect from Groves and Froch simply retaliated to what was being said - then there was the goading and dropping of his gloves in the fight?

Froch won, pure and simple. Yes the ref should have gave him another 10 seconds or at least let him get knocked out/down and back up for a standing count but IMO Groves was done.

Froch took the best of what Groves had in the first round and got up from it, Groves had a below par (for whatever reason) Froch in the ring with him for 6 rounds and still couldn't knock him out, in the end he was taking unanswered shots and the referee, rightly or wrongly intervened.

He fought that fight with 1 hand too.... It was a boxing lesson.... Lacy must have thought he was surrounded ha ha

he did hurt his hand so couldnt throw power shots, but he fought another fight literally one handed, thibk it was against ashira or something like that. I also agree he boxes both froch and groves head off, a beautifully balanced boxer, good chin, can change tactics mid fight with no help from his corner, and insane stamina levels

You do relise we are talking about referees jumping in early dont you? Khan was hurt much more than Groves and was allowed time to get through it.

I dont think thats a fine example of refereeing, though perhaps a good example of referee's favouring the promoter's fighter, Khan has been in genuine danger, and twice taken more punishment when he stopped moments after anyway

I wonder how froch's career would have panned out if he got his wish to fight Calzaghe.

It's an interesting question, Calzaghe effectively finished Lacy, and has Froch has all but admitted he would have to have knocked out Calzaghe to beat him, but Carl is a lot tougher than Lacy was imo, and would have gone on to have a fine career, and maybe even learned more lessons in losing over 12 rounds to Joe than he did in out toughing Pascal, but would have gained entry to the super six without a belt? A few others did, but they were middleweight champs I think

I think a good performance there and he could have enhanced his career, similar to Groves. Joe wasn't untouchable in his latter days and Carl can bang.

It wouldn't have been impossible for Joe to have been put on his arse.

He'd have been outboxed though, no questions. Joe boxed the last round as he boxed the first right up to the end of his career.

Bump...

Nah, sorry just didn't want to start a new thread. I'm on a bit of a boxing rush on YouTube right now, and after watch Froch vs. Bute I decided to have a nose round the recommended links and I spotted one I thought I hadn't seen before - Nigel Benn vs. Gerald McClellan.

I clicked it and quickly realised I HAD seen it, but I couldn't remember anything about it. I watch and just watched jaw dropped at what is basically the greatest fight I've ever seen in terms of pure violence and drama.

Then at the end I saw McClellan pass out in his corner and get put on a stretcher... and it all came back to me.

But what was bizarre was watching it completely oblivious to why that was such a notorious fight. To me, McClellan looked completely fine all the way up to the end (albeit doing some odd things with his gumshield). It really brought home to me the danger of boxing as there was no way you could predict the outcome there, not even when it's stopped.

Now watching Benn vs. Eubank 1; there really was some outstanding fights in the 90s.
