Sky starting a five part series "Inside the Freemasons" next Monday.

It looks interesting and should be more considered than some of the sensationalist stuff published in recent years in the print and electronic media.

It is to coincide with the 300th anniversary of the UGLE.

....and Mr Lallana seems to be in the Brotherhood - he'll feel at home with the RS so.

Houlding's abuse of his masonic and orange fraternal links was just one of the many tensions that led to the split in the board in 1892 as well as Brewer v Temperance; Tory v Liberal; Anglican v Non-Conformist.

I had also heard about this some time ago...

“Manchester City had to be bailed out by Freemasons, that’s why they play in their pale blue shirts and white shorts.”

What's it all about?
I was brought up to be suspicious of this, and the Catholic version, the catenians - mainly because the "its who you know" reality goes against my sense of fairness, where networking can bring better rewards than hard work or skill. Also - the insideous way justice can be corrupted (despite the charm offensive from the media here) .
Are they just an odd bunch with a hobby? Is it a club for people without friends? Is it as nefarious as I suspect?
The few masons I know of have all held jobs, positions or pay that have been well above their capabilities - which has bothered the hell out of me.
My prospective son in law is a mason, as is his father. His father is very wealthy (I don't know of any poor masons) and at their engagement do, recently, seemed very gregarious with his circle of friends, but made absolutely no attempt to speak to or fraternise with me, or the mother of the bride, despite our attempts. Perhaps it's because we're not part of the club, or maybe my views on secret societies have got back to him. He also, craftily, made damn sure we'd left the cheap pub and got to a massively expensive wine bar by the time it was our round. Owned by a mate of his, perhaps?

Paranoid.

I was invited to a big deal lunch in the HQ of the Masons in Bristol by a prominent businessman in town, like ages ago. Even having lived in the place for years, I had never even known that this massive building that stretched right up the left side of Park Street was their base. But it was, and owned by them. @ste d' indica will know the place.

Proper, proper weird. Like you were being sized up to be approached, and when 2 of the folks doing that were the JP and some other high level legal fella, more than a bit uncomfortable.

But apparently, so they said anyrate, they are the biggest doners to the RNLI in the UK.

My old man was in the lodge in Hoylake, years ago, but jibbed them off when he saw how they had basically robbed his dad blind over the years.
