Free Kick - Defensive Routine, the French Way

If you think about it, it makes a lot of sense in theory.

The 'keeper that far forward means the angle is slimmer so he's got a chance of diving and saving the ball if it's aimed towards the top corner before it reachers the full height. Meanwhile, any low or high drifted curler gets headed off the line.

So the only chance of scoring is to put it in a postage stamp area of the goal in the very top corner, where a 'keeper on the line wouldn't save it anyway.

It does make a lot of sense. For a player to get the ball up and over the wall, and get it on target, he has to only just clear a jumping wall. The keeper can raise his arms higher than a jumping wall, so means the taker must get the ball higher, or somehow out of the reach of the goalie.

If it evades the goalie, you've got 5 men available to clear the ball using legs, head or body if required.

I'd like to see more of this.

only in theory, if it would be used regularly the % of goals from that kind of situation would rise dramatically

We did it when I played for the Rose and Crown. Some git stuck it in the top corner!!

As said though, that's the only possible way to score if the defence does the job properly. A lofted curled shot over the 'keeper, dipping down and getting in the corner beyond the defenders headed range, or a bullet that beats the 'keeper for pace and hits the top corner on the way up.

And to be frank, nine times out of ten a free kick that good beats a 'keeper anyway.

More I think of it, it's genius. The other factor is the second line of defence alongside the 'keeper, who would rush the ball if it's played short to a different angle, and the 'keeper would have time to get back for the shot anyway.
