Franny Jefferes finds form!!! Shock Horror!!

We've had a few of those kind of youngsters. Lots of hype and not delivering or not having bodies capable of playing PL football.

All the way back to Michael Branch, Tony Grant, Danny Cadamarteri, Michael Ball, James Vaughan, Jeffers, Baxter/Kissock et al. Even Rodwell hasn't achieved his potential because of poor fitness.

If you look at our youth system we've had guys like Hibbert and Osman who were never really bigged up but have proved good, solid club men, a whole bunch of players that either haven't had the talent to match the hype, haven't been mentally any good or their bodies have been useless. The only one that's really gone on to deliver against the hype has been Rooney.

Not just an Everton problem of course, English football is full of these kinda things, but I don't care much for the other clubs.

I mean we've had 4 of the 12 youngest scorers in PL history (6 of the top 17 and 7 of the top 19), but none that have really gone on to achieve what Fabregas, Owen, heck even James Milner and Danny Wellbeck have.

Indeed, of those 7, only Rooney and Anichebe have had any kind of PL career. 7 of the others all had decent international careers. We obviously give players a chance to have more in that list than any other club, by a long way. We just don't convert them into seasoned pros.

Of that list, I'd say around 18 of the 35 have gone on to have good careers, achieving 10 international caps.

The thing is, of the 17 that haven't done that, 6 come from Everton.

That's not a great stat.

If you extend the criteria out a bit to include making 100 PL appearances, our young 'stars' fall even further down the list.

Really think it's an area we could do better in.

A lot of the Everton lads came through in the late 90s / early 00s. Wonder if the culture within the club had something to do with the relative lack of success of these players? I.e. handling their egos and offield antics, managing injuries. Ball being a great example, with the Smith sanctioned injections into his knees which didn't do him much good...

Aye, maybe. Don't think we've been that successful under Moyes either though. Rodwell and Vaughan are probably the prime examples. Both seemed like good players, but neither seem likely to fulfil the potential due to physical frailty. It's hard to fathom how two young lads can be quite so delicate physically.

Will Barkley go the same way? Remains to be seen I suppose.

You sure he hasnt just found a betting form? Hes a multi millionaire and has done even less than Michael Owen if you can believe that.

Coleman is a positive in youth player stepped up for Moyes? In a year or twos time Hallam Hope ought to be making the step to regular sub at least - heard hes a big lad and likes to dole out a few slaps. We have quite a few in the England U19's.

Yes Coleman is a plus to be fair. Sure would be nice to have 3-4-5 young lads coming through of England calibre though. The kind of thing Liverpool, Man Utd, West Ham, Leeds et al managed.

Even Saints, y'know? If you could drop Bale, Walcott and Chamberlain or a couple of that kind of calibre into our squad it'd make a big difference.

Yes, you are right Bruce, we haven't been too hot under Moyes either. Interesting that the club go rid of Rathbone a couple of seasons back. Could be an issue with how we manage players individual physiology generally and injured players specifically? Some players need careful management, especially in their formative years.

Always feel bad for Ball, looked like a real player. Sad if the playing thru injury stuff is true and ruined his career.

Yeah, was a bad business that. I recall reading that they were injecting direct into his patella tendon and he was very close to having to call it a day if the same treatment continued.
