Frank Lampard retires

I had the Gerrard/Lampard debate with a kopite and he was adamant that Gerrard was easily the better player and actually said 'there is no contest'.

I just gave up then and said, I think we can both agree that Scholes was ahead of them both. He said nothing to that.

Although, if we are talking in a general 'my' generation debate then Gazza tops my list of English midfielders.

I think the difference is for most of his career, Gerrard was carrying the RS single-handed, whereas Lampard was in a very good team. That makes Gerrard appear a better player. If he had gone to Chelsea when he should have done, it would be interesting to see the comparison. Although, as we saw for England, the 2 of them couldn't play together.

I think that's spot on , gerrard isn't the best player they've had or probably Even close but he did singlehandedly drag them either into contention or To actually win trophies time after time . Lampard was a player in a side that achieved , a cog in a machine whilst Gerrard was the fulcrum.

I think if he'd moved to Chelsea we'd have a better idea of where to rate him and not judging his ability but as much as it pains me to say it for contribution to his side I'm not sure any one comes close to Gerrard

...Lampard v Gerrard vote on BBC;

http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/38023336

Not that we would want to influence the vote.
It's very good of the Beeb to give us a summary of the key stats to help us judge. They tell us league games played, England appearances, England goals scored, trophies won, et al. I can't decide who to vote for. I wish that they would tell us who scored the most league goals so I could make up my mind. I guess that it's not a key fact.

Quite simply no Englandmanager had the balls to drop Gerrard. Lampard was the superior player in that position and Scholes should have dictated from deep with Lampsrd ahead of him.

Gerrard had this reputation as a big game player but Lampsrd did it in all the big games as well but also turned up for the smaller ones.

There is absolutely no debate around this. Their peak level is the same they could both reach world class but Gerrard only reached it sporadically over a short period, Lampard maintained it week in week out season after season, the same way Scholes did for United which is partly why those clubs won titles and Liverpool haven't.

Gerrard can occasionally take over a match but thought Alonso was the real strength of those Benetez sides. They could look like dreck for the entire match and just rely on Xabi to play that 1 pass to torres to win 1-0.

Can't stand Gerrard, but as an objective football argument, I think this is spot on.
