Frank Lampard retires

Very much in the David Platt mould. Vital player, scored lots of goals for club and country, never really talked about much.

....fantastic professional. You don't score the amount of goals that he did from midfield without an amazing commitment to the cause. Just think of the number of times he makes those lung busting runs into the box and doesn't get the ball but he keeps doing them. When a chance comes, he drops down a gear into clinical goal scoring mode.

I've said a number of times that Barkley could learn lots from watching Lampard.

One of the great debates in modern football is the Lampard/Scholes/Slippy/Beckham debate.

Amazing to think England never won anything with all four of them playing at the same time.

Lampard was the far better midfielder in my opinion than the other one. Gave more to the team and scored goals just as much, should be remembered as a great in his era, shame he never got the spotlight that he probably deserved.

Scholes was different class really, but Lampard was exceptional nonetheless. The other 2 don't really figure in any conversation really

Have to disagree as at one point Beckham was one of the best ball playing CMs in the world. To avoid the usual "ribbing" about my football allegiances from my favourite football fan of less than a decade I won't attempt to argue the case for the other one who is widely accepted as an exceptional talent.

He was banging them in for New York as well wasn't he? Fair play for not going to China for one last payday. Always struck me as articulate so could possibly see him in the punditry shortly.

My post is actually a bit too dismissive of Beckham and Gerrard in retrospect. Both great players in their prime, but I think Gerrard's prime was actually pretty short, a 2 or 3 year window where he looked, and I hate this term, "world class". No doubt he was one of the great PL players at his peak.

Lampard, for me, was consistently at that level for his entire career with Chelsea. Just a great all-rounder, great scorer of goals, passer, tackler, always fit, always at the centre of Chelsea's successes. I think he was a level above Beckham and Gerrard, but that is no insult to them

Premier league Legend without doubt.
Seeing Davies run yesterday to force a good save from Grant reminded of frank.

Could still do a job at Swansea or Burnley for example, unfortunately I don't think players like Gerrard or Lampard would want to go there. Quite funny really as they are willing to go to America instead lol

He writes children's books...

Think it's definitely fair to say that Lampard's "peak" was Longer than Becks and Gerrard, in fact just looking on Wiki for 5 seasons on the bounce from 05/06 he scored no less than 20 goals per season (Highest 27, and the season before 19!) Virtually a 1 in 3 scorer for Chelsea overall, you'd be happy with a striker getting those sort of figures . Scholes only had one 20 goal season (surprising), Beckham's highest was 16 and Gerrard only had 3 seasons scoring 20 plus.

Know it's not all about goals but when you lay the stats down for "attacking midfielders" there is a big divide.
