Did it go that wrong?

He was a bit of a bright spot pre-Rooney when we were desperate, he won two FA Cup winners medals and played for England. He wasn't that good in the end and had a reasonable career.

It's hardly John Paul Kissock levels of disappointment

All that sticks in my mind is him buggering off to Arsenal, disappointing them, coming back and doing Moyes' nut in.

Turned down the chance to become the highest paid player in our history. After spitting his dummy out several times before over his wages.

Looked like a serious talent for us in his first spell but was nowhere near ready to get into Arsenals team. The step up to Arsenal was huge at that time. Lost 2 years of development and never really looked the same player again.

A bit of an idiot too, by all accounts.

.... he got a big money move and became a full international but couldn't apply himself like the top players at Arsenal. He was talented, he was potential but he got found out at the top.

If I recall we got about 10mil for him (a lot at the time) and he thought he'd get a game at Arsenal who had Bergkamp, Henry and Anelka in their squad...
