Norwich City will travel to Cambridge United on Friday night for their third pre-season fixture as they continue their preparations for a return to the Premier League.

But, in an unprecedented moved, both clubs have decided to change one of the fundamental rules of football and follow the lead of American football to play the fixture in four quarters instead of two halves.

In a statement on the club website, Norwich explained their reasoning behind the decision:

‘Norwich City’s pre-season game at Cambridge United’s Abbey Stadium on Friday, July 17 (7:30pm) is to be played across 120 minutes – split into four 30 minute quarters,’ it read.

‘The extended fixture has been agreed by both Clubs in order to maximise the playing time of the respective sides ahead of the 2015-16 campaign.’

Personally I think it's a great idea, you can try more youngsters out for 30mins or so you can give more of the squad a good 60 mins and allows you breaks every half hour to get everyone together and explain what you want them to do more. Ideal for a pre-season.

thoughts?

I've done this with a team I managed before, worked out brilliantly, but was only discussed/organised on the day, mostly due to the heat. Allowed each team a full break at given times. We only did it in 3 30 mins though. It was brillliant to try tactics/squads and they knew to put it all in for 30 mins, rather than not know how long they'd have.

Went to a game Saturday which was played in three thirty minute periods, with the teams turning round after fifteen minutes of the second period !!

Not so sure myself. You wouldn't advise somebody training for a marathon to run 6 and a half miles, have a break etc. They're preparing for 2 45 minute halves. IMO, they should have just stuck to that, and added on another half hour of extra time, to maximize the game time. Quarters? GTFO :P

Could be worth a go. Could also reduce injury maybe? More breaks and more chance to check those v minor niggles before they become and issue. But still offering plenty of playing time if someone needs to get back to fitness.

yeah but you could give some players a full 90 mins and others 120 if they were really sucking down the lard over the summer.

Or maybe they could just play a normal game of footy, yeah?
Why? It's a practise session, nothing else. Pre-season should be used to trial formations, bed in new players, and build up fitness. There is nothing at stake, therefore there is no real need to simulate a real match.
