Phelan Gets Everton Opportunity
Blue Square Bet North club Altrincham have been dealt a blow on the eve of the new season with the news that 24-year-old midfielder Scott Phelan is leaving Moss Lane.
Phelan has been doing voluntary working coaching at Barclays Premier League giants Everton.
To his surprise, he was called into the Merseyside team's office on Friday and offered a full-time job as a coach to 9-11 year-olds with the Toffees. He is expected to sign a contract tomorrow.
Phelan is sad to be leaving Moss Lane but, as chairman Grahame Rowley stated: "It is a great opportunity for Scott, at a Premiership club, and we wish him well." Phelan was signed by Altrincham in March 2012, two weeks after he had joined Vauxhall Motors, where he had been on loan since December 2011, from Kidderminster Harriers. Harriers released him in February 2012.
As a youngster, Phelan was with Everton where he was captain of the Toffeemen's under-18s and reserves before he was released in 2007.
A contract with Bradford City followed and it was with the Bantams that he made his Football League debut, as a substitute, in August, 2007.
He went on to make thirteen League and three cup appearances for the Yorkshire club. In a mass clear-out at the Bantams, Phelan was released at the end of the 2007/08 season.
Next, he joined FC Halifax Town in September 2008 before he signed for Kidderminster.
He made his Alty debut as a substitute against Stalybridge Celtic in March 2012 and had made eleven appearances and had scored two goals before his unexpected departure.
