Formation next season.

With the players we have, I'd like to see Everton set up similar to how United did from 2007-09.

Lukaku, Deulofeu, Mirallas and Barkley could be devastating on the break; it just takes someone with a varied range of passing to sit alongside McCarthy. Gibson would be ideal were it not for his fitness issues, but as things are he needs to be replaced.

If Martinez managed to sign a creative centre midfielder and a goalkeeper between now and the end of the window I'd be made up. Unfortunately though, I've no doubt that he's happy to carry on telling limited water carriers to play like Spain.

Perhaps, I don't think we have the workrate in the forwards there that United had in Rooney and Tevez particularly. We do always look bloody good when we set up to counter though.

Did people not see Cazorla yesterday? IMO we need to get Barkley to try and become that type of player.

Someone who starts off deep but still has a huge impact in the final third of the pitch. It'd give the opposition so much more to think about if we had Barkley breaking from further back.

If Arouna Kone was any good we could've tried a 442.

Unfortunately he isn't, so that's that. I read somewhere that a 3331 is an actual thing - not sure our full backs and a lone CB would work in the way we want in that though.

My hope is he picks a formation that suits the players he has picked, not picking a formation and then just putting the players in the places whether it suits them or not.

This all day long I = I agree and hope he doesn't

This all day long II = This is exactly what he will do

Barry holding, McCarthy and Barkley in the middle going box to box.

Wide playmaker on the left, out and out winger on the right.

I wanna see us try 3 at the back in the pre season at some point.

-----------------------Howard--------------------------
---------Stones --------Jags --(new cb/galloway)----
Coleman- -----------McCarthy----------------- Baines
------------Ross------------------Pienaar/playmaker-
--------------Lukaku----------Kev----------------------

Or alternatively shelve the additional attacking mid and put in a defensive player against the better teams.

Yeah, that combination of talent and effort is quite rare. United didn't realise what they had in Tevez.

One of the two midfielders need to start getting ahead of the ball and running into the box. McCarthy should have this in his locker tbh.

This is possibly why Besic might be a better player in that role than McCarthy. Don't get me wrong, I love McCarthy to bits as a player but he is reluctant to get forward. If he can learn to do what Barry does, then he can be the more defensive of the two, letting Besic get forward while Barry watches from afar, preferably the Championship.

It'll be the other way round. Besic will end up playing the Barry holding role while McCarthy gets forward a bit more.
