Dario Terracotta

Player Valuation: £70m
I for one would love us to adopt,in the majority of home games(barring the top 4/5 sides)and selected "easier" away fixtures, just the one holding midfielder(McCarthy),lets take the shackles off and set about teams with our two wingers/Barkley,new no:10,even play two up top if we sign a forward, but please ditch the two sitting there, for the more difficult fixtures hopefully Besic can come in and play a more prominent role this term.

The reluctance so far to experiment with formations this pre season has been the biggest concern for me this summer, signings will eventually be made, but we're lacking fresh ideas it seems just like we did all of last season.

The bold dynamic manager who walked through the doors 2 years ago and charmed everyone in his first season has dissappearded and we need someone to drag him back out of his hiding place.

It's a shame Besic got injured so early pre season as I was hoping he would be getting a bit of game time. I would be disappointed too if we stick to the 2 sitting midfielders for the majority of games. At the very least the personnel he picks needs to be mixed up more.

Hopefully its not too bad a knock mate and he can fit a couple of games in before the opener, the midfield on yesterdays evidence looks in need of a revamp IMHO.

But the 2 dm's don't just "sit there" do they?

Barry drops in as a 3rd centre back as Jags and Stones split as the 2 fullbacks push up the pitch, and both Barry and McCarthy also cover at left back and right back when Baines and Coleman are up the pitch, as Martinez doesn't seem that keen on the wide men doing too much tracking back.

It's not as simple as playing 4 defenders and then 2 defensive midfielders in front giving us a 6 man defensive unit.

Yeah one of the 2 dm's could be more of a playmaker type player but Barry's experience and positioning with McCarthy's energy and workrate make it understandable why they play in our system. With 2 attacking full backs and attacking players who don't do a lot of tracking back we need them.

I'm not sure McCarthy could actually play on his own as a single dm.

Obviously it has it's downsides with Barrty being slow and McCarthy not being very creative but they seem to be working on that.

I think if we play the same way but take one of the dm's out we'd be in trouble apart from home games against poor opposition.

I didn't get to see the game yesterday mate as I was in work but listened to the commentary and you can tell when they are trying to gloss over issues. It sounded to me a lot like last seasons issues.

I'm still giving him the benefit of the doubt though Dario and putting it down to pre season and I'm hoping beyond hope that he brings a couple of players in still. I fear if he doesn't he won't be seeing the season out!

I think that changed quite a lot last season,Bainsey and Seamus both looked a lot more restricted going forward and more aware of their defensive duties as though they were playing to orders.

It doesn't work though. We've become too predictable and teams know exactly how to defend against us and how to attack against us. We've become quite boring to watch as a result. We need to change things around or this season we'll have the same problems that we did last season.

Yeah but not because we play Barry and McCarthy as 2 pure sitting dm's which people seem to think they do.

I'm not saying we shouldn't change things up but playing them 2 doesn't mean we play a rigid defensive game, far from it.

We play a slow boring pass pass pass game. Well last season we did, 2 seasons ago we played a faster more direct attacking game with Barry and McCarthy in midfield.
