if you're playing a sweeper it shouldnt be stubbs, surely someone with a bit of pace, so that if they have to cover a mistake by one of the other centre halves they can do so quickly, not get left behind?!?

if you play a sweeper he needs to be able to read a game, pace is secondary, imo no one at the club reads a game better than Stubbsy. Look at Davie Weir, he'd be left for dead by Alan but he is still playing top flight in Scotland, Europe and internationally because of his natural ability to spot attacks(y)

Thats my thoughts exactly monty. A sweeper is someone who needs to read the game well, let Yobo and Lescott run around after those pacy strikers all day, while Stubbs experience would allow him to cut out all those tactical moves to get around the front two.

I think the whole point of the sweeper is to act as cover, so I dont think pace is neccesarily important.

unless the ball or runner is played in on the flanks, then an entire defence is obsolete due to opposition being onside. defence is always better running away from its own goal instead of running towards it.
