Let's forget about the Pienaar saga for a second.

Why do people insist on holding footballers to a higher moral standard?

I know of priests that have been arrested for molesting young boys, a U.S president that was almost impeached for sleeping with his P.A and a british king who killed 3 or 4 of his wives!!! If an ordained priest, a US president and a british monarch are prone to fall into the same pitfalls as most mere mortals, why then do we expect footballers to act/behave like saintly figures?

Are you Conor McCloud?

Calling a [Poor language removed] a [Poor language removed] doesn't mean I expected him not to be a [Poor language removed] or even that I'm demanding that he not act like a [Poor language removed]. It just means he's a [Poor language removed].

We dont.

Nor do we have any respect for kiddy fiddling Priests, PA slotting Presidents and Wife murdering Kings.

Why then,do most fans get their knickers in a knot whenever a footballer gets into a little bit of trouble with the law? why are most people quick to get on their high horse and start slating them for the very same things that they, themselves are guilty of?

For the same reason we expect all members of society to act with common decency?

They have a privileged lifestyle for kicking a little ball around, albeit something that gives us a lot of enjoyment. If you have any kind of professional job you are generally meant to maintain a high standard in your personal life as to not bring your employers reputation into disrepute. If you can't abide by these standards, then you don't deserve the wages or the privileges the job brings.

To some degree you can understand if someone who has nothing, comes from an underprivileged background, and has role models with questionable moral compasses turns out to be a less than stellar member of society. Having said that I grew up poor on a council estate and I didn't turn to a life of crime etc. We're all different, but poor decisions in life carry consequences, and footballer or no footballer you should never be exempt from those consequences.

Just cos you beat people up in pubs, break the speed limtis willy nilly and beat up your pregnant fiance who you then ditch, doesn't mean we all do.

I don't even drive for a start. Or have sex with women.

Because footballers are famous.

If I told you about my mate Danny who's just got 3 points for speeding you wouldn't give a toss.
