What enters the field of play in a football match at half-time, but doesn't leave until the match is over? If it's a Saturday match it leaves after the game, but if it's a mid-week game it remains until the next day... and it only happens in the English Premiership, not in Scotland or the lower divisions...

.

Just been doing some research and it does seem to be a load of bollocks

Port Vale is right

Ah but is it?

Port Vale existed as a place name when the club was founded, that's where the name came from. It isn't used a place name now.

Arsenal is a better candidate.

The club was founded as Woolwich Arsenal in the South London district of Woolwich, by workers at the Royal Arsenal.

The Royal Arsenal was an armaments manufacturing company belonging to the British Crown - not a place. Later it became part of the Royal Ordnance Company and the Woolwich site was closed in 1967.

Only in the last 20 years with the opening of DLR Woolwich Arsenal Railway station and the Woolwich Arsenal Pier has the word Arsenal been used in a place name.

Port Vale was my "correct" answer

Port Vale was my "correct" answer

I'm sure that's the "correct" answer that does the rounds. If the question was "...does not contain the name of a place which is in current use?" it would work better.

But changing it slightly to :
"Of the current teams competing in the Premier League through to League 2, what is the only club whose name name does not contain the name of a place name in use at the time it was named?" The answer would be Arsenal.
