I have a subscription. It's pretty good. Not just analytical stuff but also niche stuff, that journalists would not be allowed to publish in normal newspapers because the mainstream would not be interested. A lot of obscure historical stuff too.

Sounds like it's right up my alley. I think I saw something about it having a lot of articles about ownership is that true?

I never did get the subscription but now it sounds like I need to get ir

They write about all kinds of things. I'm sure there are things about ownership in there. It's been a while since I looked in there TBH. Wilson writes a lot of about Eastern Europe in there, as well as Marcelo Bielsa and other south american stuff. But there's really all sorts in there. Each article is quite a long read.

Don’t know The Blizzard at all but I highly recommend When Saturday Comes (WSC) magazine. It has it all really, lower leagues, world football and tackles the issues of today like fan ownership, racism, super league etc
I had a subscription for WSC from the early days. I just cancelled recently. For me it has become very stale and right on. It used to be anarchic and funny, now, Harry Pearson aside, every opinion piece reads like it’s been written by a wannabe Josh Widdicombe script writer.

No other football magazine on the market like it for me. In fact it’s the only one to take a stand on issues rather than just dismiss them as part of the modern game.

Like all print press though, it is a struggle for them surviving, perhaps for the reasons you say.

I agree there is no other. It’s stand points are admirable mostly but it has become (imo) very jaded as good governance in the game has continued to deteriorate and it’s criticisms muted.

So I'm back with a couple new purchases.

I bought the Price of Football by Kieran Maguire, and
Christoph Biermann
Football Hackers: The Science and Art of a Data Revolution

Anyone read either of these? Second one I stumbled on and I'm pretty interested because I feel advanced analytics in football I have almost no understanding or just dismiss too quickly. I usually find Xg to be a useless stat, but I know the future of the game is heading into this direction so I'd like to understand it.

When we grew up, football was always the sport many said you couldn't just break down into stats and summarize that way. Obviously things are changing and people are developing effective methods, or they believe are effective to analyze the game in such ways.

Anyone have any suggestions or thoughts on these books/topics please share

I might read the Football Hackers one. Right up my stat nerd alley.

Well when I get to it. I just went with the kindle edition for a buck, and I hate reading books on my phone so I'll probably be a slow reader on that one...

But if I get a good deal of it read soon I'll let you know if I think it's worth the purchase. Reviews are pretty good.

Have you read any longer form pieces on the subject you'd recommend? Not trying to make you dig up stuff if it's not just recallable off the top of your head don't bother, I'll do my own further research. I hate when people pawn that stuff off on other people.

I bought it already lol

And back in the day I read some stuff I think from the Sloan Conference but I definitely don't have anything accessible at the minute. I follow some stats guys on Twitter and I'll go down rabbit holes sometimes but I don't really track it well.

Hmm I'll have to do some googling. I don't avidly follow statistics like that but usually anything from the Sloan Conference is interesting.

Edit: But I think it's definitely time I get a grasp on statistics in football. The advanced analytics are great in American football.

I know they are really changing things in hockey which is another sport that I think statistics were very rudimentary until the last decade or so. I heat the stats but lol I don't know jack bleep about hockey so not really worth anything for me. However, in terms of sport of they can be that impactful in hockey I think they can be valuable in football. I think they have some similarities.

The way new stats have just sort of become commonplace in NFL circles (or at least the stuff I read and listen to) is pretty crazy. My understanding is the stuff inside the organizations is even more complex too. This kind of thing is here to stay in all sports.
