Football Italia

Used to watch it almost every week for the first season looking out for Gazza and trying to find interest in Italian football. Towards the end of that season I realised I don't actually love football as a sport at all. I'd often doze off in some of those games. I tried to identify and follow a team in Seria A but couldn't. Realised then and now footy is purely tribal for me. Everton and to a lesser extent Celtic. Anything else and it's just 22 hairy men chasing a ball.

*though I did think Richardson was a great presenter and that the programme as a whole was well put together.

When it began all you heard was people saying Italian Footy was crap and boring. The 1st game I watched was Lazio v Roma and I think it ended up 5-3 to Lazio with riots in the stadium and parts of it on fire whilst the game carried on.

Great stuff!

Those were the days. Transworld Sport on a Saturday morning, followed by the Football Italia magazine show. You'd then play Sunday league the next day and be back in time for the live match on Channel 4, with the best players in the world on display (plus sometimes Des Walker).

One of my earliest football memories was watching the great Milan defence of the mid/late 90's and being amused by the haircut of a then old and very slow Baresi on a weekly basis.

That team was super sexy. From the Dutch team all the way to the Savicevic inspired mauling of Barca in the European Cup final.

The Yugoslav team from that era had a scary amount of talent. Pancev, Prosinecki, Savicevic, Boban, Stojković, Suker...

Obviously the troubles in that region put it all into perspective, but it was a real shame they weren't given their stage at Euro 1992.
