Football In The 70's

Cork Evertonian

Player Valuation: £50m
I was binge watching some of those BBC Match Of The 70's episodes on YouTube. Apart from that league title win by Cattericks fine 1970 vintage Everton team, it was a barren decade for Everton otherwise in terms of trophies.

We came close on a couple of occasions though almost winning the league in 1975, almost winning a League Cup in 1977 and getting robbed by Clive Thomas against the rs in that same years FA Cup semi final.

Better passion, better atmosphere and it was possible for the likes of Derby County and Nottingham Forest to win league titles. I wasn't around back then, but football being better back in the 70's is a pretty obvious conclusion to me anyway.

Supporting Everton seemed like more fun than it does in the post 1995 FA Cup win era as well.:)

Don't tell this to all the hipsters who think every team should be playing out from the back.

Me pops took me in the 70s and by the end of it I was a scruffy teenage dirtbag. Never saw us win anything, but it was a brilliant time. Players with real passion unlike the present overpaid bunch. Too much trouble though, and vile racial comments.

A match here from the Billy Bingham era when we beat Leeds. I think Cloughie resigned as Leeds manager afterwards.

Leeds were a great team in that era obviously. Peter Lorimer was their best player for me, but with the allegations about Don Revie bribing or at least attempting to bribe opponents. I feel that it does tarnish their success somewhat.

Tommy Docherty told a story in one of the episodes, about him trying to appeal to the Man United fans to stop causing trouble at a game.

This was when they were in the old second division. Apparently a paving slab thrown by the United fans only narrowly missed him by a few inches!

As an 11 year old it was of the best games for atmosphere I’d ever been to, as everyone hated Leeds

The way Leeds would come out on the pitch and do their little wave to the crowd home or away as if they were the Harlem Globetrotters rather than a shower of thugs.
I actually do think they were hard done by in that 1975 European cup final, but with the aforementioned bribing attempts by Revie justice ultimately was probably served there.

Only Somewhat?
They were a 'kin disgrace more or less from the time they they got promoted.
Their hardman image and style was based on Revie's (mistaken?)fear of not being good enough. Their getting their retaliation in first was designed to upset the other teams rhythm.
the fact that they were (mostly) good enough makes it worse in my book.
The Could've realised that they didn't need to behave like they did
But, again, my opinion, they started to revel in it.

Listen, or read, but it's better in the audio version, NSFW mind, so not with the kiddies in the car 'The Damned Untd'

Leeds (dirty dirty Leeds)

Cloughie was famously sacked by Leeds United after 44 days in charge but I appreciate you were not born then.

That Leeds team was superb - hard as nails but could play anybody off the pitch. Johnny Giles personified them: clever, skillful, hard.

I was never bothered by a team of cloggers - if they could back it up and play. And they could do that as well as anybody.

And, yes, football in the 1970s and 80s was better than today in many ways.

And that's before we even get to the players and teams. Why? Well, they didn't ruin glorious competitions like the FA Cup, First Division, European Championship, World Cup, or European Champions Cup by bloating their formats, financially doping a few select sides, and making it impossible for the bulk of sides to compete.

The last Euros was a farce. The current Champions League is a forgettable bloat. The next World Cup will have 768 group games. The FA Cup has been rendered pointless with no replays and multiple matches spread over multiple days. And the PL has been doped to the gills for two decades.

Oh, and Jimmy Hill and Brian Moore were miles better than Carra-la, G NEV, and Micah Hibbert.

We've definitely seen the best of association football, I fear.

It all ended in 1992 we just didn't know it at the time.
