Firefighter Sam

If they are called firefighters and the chief of firefighters was just making a point that maybe the show change its name to get with the times that actually they are not known as firemen anymore why do people care?

Doesn't he have a right to have an opinion on said matter seen as he is well experienced in all things firefighting and the stigmas and sensitivities that come with it?

All people have to do is either say they agree with him or not and move on. If it does not affect you why does anyone care? Would you stop your kid from watching it?

Its a topic which causes debate mate. Look at this thread. People's heads have exploded over a kids cartoon.

1) The chief is a woman. ;)

2) She certainly has the right to a view. However, because it's coming from such a senior position, it also has a right to be scrutinised by the public. So it does matter in that respect because of the authoritative position the view is coming from.

3) She has the right to change job titles and so on as much as she likes. Firefighter isn't new; it's also in common use. Hell, I played a game called Rosco McQueen: Firefighter Extreme in the 90s - no uproar about calling it Fireman Extreme instead, because the vernacular is fine.

4) It does affect society overall because the rationale behind it has an impact on other similar issues. Sometimes slippery slope is neither a fallacy nor inherently negative - by drawing mainstream attention to something many would find trivial and/or ludicrous, it impacts on other voices speaking up on matters that do actually matter.

Is calling for Fireman Sam to be renamed and the ridicule it gets as a result really worth blunting a valid argument on gender pay gaps or corporate gender representation within the same industry in the future? Does it really help their hashtag campaign of "#FireFightingSexism" if people are laughing at the medium they used to kick it off? Is the word "fireman" really the most harmful thing to women in their industry; the one thing to focus on?

That's why I care - because when people take the headline grabbing silly approach to serious issues, the serious issues become more silly by definition. You don't see anyone outraged by the #MeToo hashtag on Twitter, because that has a serious narrative, is led by people with legit grievances about a serious matter, and it is not laughed at. It doesn't trivialise sexism and rape; it brings it to the forefront of public thought in a meaningful way. Moaning about Fireman Sam not being Firefighter Sam does not quite hit the same mark.

Oops i missed the fact the chief was female my bad. Haha!!

Also very valid points well said.

Anyone can take the mick out of me about anything I say on here. Disagree as hard and as much as they like.

But don't call me a racist. Red line for me. Not a hard request. If anyone thinks I've said something "out of order", report it, get me banned. A better bet than making cowardly snide comments constantly.

I don't see it as banter. I see it as being a shithouse.

Warned for language, but he's spot on.

Mods have discussed this previously, and it's a current issue in mod central. I've told them all to perm ban anyone who insinuates any foul play on race - it's not a joke and I'm absolutely sick of it, it's cowardly snide, not the good snide and without context it reflects poorly on the site.

Some would do well to remember this platform isn't your playground.
