In all honesty, I'd say those outraged by a potential change are far more irritating, and a much bigger problem in moving towards a progressive society, every time I hear someone use the phrase 'PC gone mad', I hear it in piers morgans voice, and that's exactly the kind of person they are agreeing with

Mad and wrong. Sam is a man and therefore fireman is fine. Now if there was a woman firefighter she could be a firewoman Samantha or Sam for short if she so wished. I would use firefighter Sam if that person was of a nondescript gender and spent the week days as a man and at the weekends identified as a woman. As we have not yet had the late night version of Fireman Sam we have to assume this is not the case. In which case why is this chief trying to 'out' him?

Of course they needed something to cover both sexes so all the documents they don't have to put fireman/firewoman that is understandable.

But I was born before that was the case and I'm old fashioned and stuck in my ways.
