So, those glorious leaders of our beautiful game have, in their undoubted wisdom and with all their usual thoughtful understanding, decided to ban England and Scotland from wearing poppies during their fixture on Armistice Day.

Thoughts?

Unfortunately the poppy has become a political symbol rather than a gesture of remembrance in recent years. Not sure if FIFA have a stance on political statements on shirts, worn under shirt messages etc. It's a shame but clearly they think the divisive issue is best left away from the football ground
Hardly divisive considering we were fighting as one nation.

wear them any way...but don't mention the war

It is Scotland we're playing, not Germany.
FIFA are bells by default
keep politics out of sport.

I'm sure Germans are equally respectful of their dead. In fact, so many men were sent in like lambs to the slaughter, I pay my respects to all those who perished in the fields of dubya-dubya-one and two, regardless of their origin.

Subsequent wars are a little murkier, if you ask me.

They've done this loads of times

I remember a stink about it a few years ago when we were due to play, I think, Spain in a friendly

I think we got around it last time by having the poppies on our jackets, which we then took off prior to the kick off, so I imagine we'll do the same this time, as will the Scots

Every year the same three things seem to happen regards poppies and football

- FIFA say England can't wear poppies, rabble rabble rabble
- A smattering of Celtic supporters will interrupt the minutes silence, rabble rabble rabble
- A prominent Irish player will ask if he can decide not to wear a poppy, rabble rabble rabble

It's a shame, because I've never had a problem with the poppy or the minutes silence because it's supposed to be for all soldiers who died in all wars, which I think is a nice sentiment, but there always seems to be some issue attached to it, which spoils things

Sadly the poppy has become politicised over time.

Personally, I would prefer that they allow it at the England game, but by and large I think that FIFA are right to try to keep politics out of international football.

Fine by me.

Politics should be kept out of sport.

And allowing one set of belligerents in a war to display emblems commemorating it when half the countries playing in the European section of the competition were the other belligerents serves no useful purpose IMO.

Just let the games proceed without artificial controversy being created.

As an aside, Tommy.....you call for people to "keep it civil" yet your opening paragraph is quite partisan and practically invites uncivil responses :p
