SF results
Tunisia 1 Egypt 0 - an injury time own goal decided a tight, even game.
Qatar 1 Algeria 2 - a spectacular volley gave Algeria a lead they held to the 7th minute of injury time when a fine header brought the hosts level. Extra time looked certain but the referee awarded a dubious VAR penalty to Algeria. The keeper saved the spot kick but the rebound was knocked home in the 17th minute of injury time to break Qatar hearts.

Both games more enjoyable than watching us (arsenal excepted)!

You'll be pleased to learn that Qatar clinched 3rd place by beating Egypt 5-4 on penalties after a dour 0-0 draw. Qatar keeper man of the match.

The final today saw Algeria win the Arab Cup by beating Tunisia 2-0 after extra time. It was certainly the dullest game I've seen in the tournament until the closing stages of the 90 minutes when Tunisia wasted a great chance to win when after a quick break left them with three against two but the shot flew wide. There were 7 bookings at that stage - could have been more. Tunisia looked the better side early in extra time but 10 minutes into it substitute Sayoud curled home a magnificent left-foot shot from the edge of the box - a goal fit to win any tournament. Tunisia pressed for an equaliser and in the final minute they won a corner, the keeper came up, the ball was hoofed clear to Yacine Brahimi who raced half the length of the field before tapping in with no defender within 20 yards..

Overall the tournament has been a success with good crowds and good atmosphere at the games. There were plenty of exciting games and some of the unfancied teams performed creditably, notably Jordan, while the hosts were happy with the tournament and their team's 3rd place finish. As expected, though, the North African teams dominated and any one of them could have won it, especially Morocco.

Just wondering why it's called the Arab Cup.
They're certainly not all Arab countries.
Perhaps they all use some form of Arabic as one of their languages.

I wouldn't worry too much about those minor details.

When Qatar hosted the Asian Games in the early 00's they handed out passports and sizeable ammounts of money to elite athletes from Africa and dominated their home games.

Not a Qatari born medal winner in site. Its far too much effort for them to train and actually work for something. They have a tentative claim on the one who won the joint gold at the Olympics, I think in the high jump? He was at least born in Qatar. (to I think Sudanese parents)
