You buy packs to be have a random chance at getting good players for your ultimate team. Basically, its the only way to earn coins quick. You hope for 93 Ronaldo and usually will pack 80 Diogo Jota

And why do you need coins quick? How else do you earn coins?

Ultimate team is the "main" mode on the game. You basically start off with bad players and have to play the game to unlock challenges, packs, to build your team up. Basically starting off with Cardiff City and you will eventually get to Barcelona quality players. Coins are used to purchase players off the transfer market that other real life users place on. They pack a player and don't want them, they can place them on a transfer market that all players on the specific console could purchase for in game coins. The in game points (FIFA Points) accelerate the process because you build your a lot quicker than the lay person due to the amount of players you get on your team. You are able to sell the people on the transfer market to get coins to eventually buy the higher quality players. Sorry for this word vomit but it sounded good in my head.

Career mode is offline an doesnt need coins?

Correct! Career mode is offline. The ultimate team is only online. Career mode you use the more of a real life situation for funds. Bigger clubs have bigger funding but not real money or coins you built up from ultimate team are used. Two separate game modes respectively

You can build a team without coins which I prefer for the challenge, takes me ages but I usually have a decent team after 3 months.
 
Been playing it today, first impressions were good with it set to 'slow' game speed, very smooth, Ball physics and set pieces much improved... overall a lot better than the demo was.

Then the more I played the more I realised just how bad your teams defensive AI is and how much more magnified this is when you play online. It's been several years now where the defensive AI has had serious issues (full backs in particular) and seems that's the case again this year. Im sure some of the issues will get resolved via sliders but that only effects offline gameplay and my main interest in playing sports games is for the multiplayer.

The defence is all over the place, the positioning of the AI is terrible.

My advice is to set full backs and defensive mids on stay back to help out the defence and try a 4231 type formation. If you feel this stifles your attacking ability then you can always adjust in game

You know what, I’d forgot about the instructions. I had it set like that last year, probably will make the difference.
