Fibromyalgia

My missus seems to have something that is similar in every way, but the doc says no. He won't / can't say what it is or how it might be treated. Every day she feels weak and in pain at exertion or to the slightest touch. She eats healthily and is active. A mystery to all and a complete crimp on our lifestyle.

Being very cynical, back pain was a common sickness reason. In the advent of MRI it's Fibromyalgia or mental healh.

I have little sympathy for punters who use mental health as a flippant excuse. No man wants to walk the steps of a person who is struggling mentally.

Just throwing it out there as I'm undecided.

In other words the Doc doesn't know what it is, so should refer her to someone who might.

Go and see another Doctor, who may look it at differently.

An example :

A mate of mine is married to a GP and he point blank refuses to acknowledge the existence of ME, despite the overwhelming body of evidence. He believes that it's a form of depression, rather than a physical condition.

It's subjective mate x

Doesn't matter if it's in the head or not, if the symptoms are real to the patient, surely? If you're feeling really ill, then the only relevance the category of diagnosis should have is to your potential treatment. I.e. Could therapy help?

There's so much we don't understand about ailments both physical and mental, so I think judging people or dismissing their problems too quickly is foolish. Being ill is one thing but then being ridiculed, ignored or not taken seriously, well that would make you feel terrible at a time when you already feel run down.

There will always be scroungers who exaggerate and lie about their problems, but I think I'd rather give people the benefit of the doubt. I'd feel worse dismissing someone in pain than I would being taken for a fool by someone who wasn't.

This sounds like a CNS sensitisation issue imo.
Have you tried getting a chronic pain referral?

I probably have it (undiagnosed) and both my brothers have it. (confirmed)

Interesting point whether it's mental or not. Stress does not help, so the mind definitely plays a part. However I can be mentally in a good place and not felt bad for a while and then all of a sudden get whacked out by it.

I get by day to day but it's not fun.
